Had a dispute with another lawyer in my office. He claimed it was Rikki Tikki Tembo who fell into the well. I was certain that he was mistaken. According to my best childhood recollection, it was in fact Eddie-Coochie-Cochie-Comma-Toasted-Here-And-Toastd-Okra-Sama-Kama-Walkie-Brown who “fell into the well, fell into the well, fell into the deep dark well.” So sure am I that little Lucy [whats-her-face] ran to get her mother’s help, but failed to get the name out fast enough such that “Eddie-Coochie-Cochie-Comma-Toasted-Here-And-Toasted-Okra-Sama-Kama-Walkie-Brown, DROWNED!!” Can someone please verify this Americanized version of the Chinese story about poor Rikki. And what the heck was Little Lucy’s last name anyway???!!!

This is so tacky that I’m remaining anonymous. But I remember being taught this song in the early 70’s in “the hood”, where my aunt and her family lived. Of course, you remember the trash when you’re a child: Your left, Your left Your left, right left My back is aching, my belts too tight My booty’s shaking from left to right abracadabra, soda crackers, evolution, revolution eat the back of my butt, eat the back of my butt Your momma, your poppa your greasy granny, got a hole in her panties And a big behind, like frankenstein going beep-beep-beep down Sesame Street.

Remember the plastic “Jellies?” I had a brief moment with platforms…Painful and brief. My aunt bought me a brand new pair of plaid printed leather platforms. I wore them to school, and on my way down the metal stairs to lunch I busted my you-know-what. Everyone laughed for days at my expense. I laugh to myself when I think back. “Back” was in the late mid/late 70’s, but even to this day I never wear heels. And I don’t miss the corns either. Later, Ladies – Denise

Great big gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts Mutilated monkey meat, little birdies’ dirty feet Seven thousand pounds of prehistoric porpoise pus And me without my spoon. All together now Scab sandwich with pus on top Monkey vomit and camel snot Put it all together and what’ve you got? A typical McDonald’s milkshake. (Sung to the tune of “The Old Gray Mare) (Circa approx. 1965)

Remember some of those old tongue twisters? My father seemed to have hundreds of them. Try these: One smart fellow, he felt smart, Two smart fellows, they felt smart, Three smart fellows, they all felt smart. (Note: This can get ugly when the tongue gets twisted)!! Washington’s wash woman washed Washington’s white wash while Washington’s wife went west. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. A peck of pickled peppers, Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked? I heard this one on Wonderama with Sonny Fox: Unique New York (to be said 3 times fast) … and a clever saying: Shake Shake the ketchup bottle None’ll come and then a lot ‘ll.
There is no friend like…
There is no friend like an old friend. I have found that the “friendships” I have made in my adult years are not really friendships at all. I have made many acquaintances, but nothing measures up to the friendships I developed early in my life. I think that generally, children are much more open and honest. Unfortunately, over the years, we learn not to trust others as freely as we did when we were children. Perhaps that is the reason that the closest friendships seem to develop during our childhood years. I guess a new relationship could never measure up to the relationships that have survived through decades of experiences, trust, and changing times. There are few things more joyful than sharing your triumphs with your oldest dearest friend, who understands how much the success means to you and genuinely shares in your happiness. Similarly, there is nothing more comforting than hearing the voice of your best friend during a family crisis, professional defeat, or occasional insecurity about your own worth. She can heighten your elation during the best of times and can brighten your mood during the worst of times. Although we live across the country from one another, my “best friend” and I still phone each other a couple of times a month, and we try to see each other at least once per year. When we get together, it’s as though no time at all has passed since our last visit. Best of all, we reminisce about the silliest things, and they still make us laugh.

I was born in 1954 and grew up across the street from P.S. 194 in the Marine Park section of Brooklyn. Right in front of our apartment building, someone would draw the “potsy” board (never hopscotch), and we’d just start playing… Free but lots of fun! Personally, my housekey was my tool of choice. I remember my mother warning me that I would wear out the teeth on the key and I wouldn’t be able to open the door anymore… What funny memories!
