I had a Shirley Temple doll, she came with a few outfits and was about 12″ tall. I wanted her for Christmas so bad. I remember how carefully I combed and restyled her curly hair.

Ginny dolls, Tiny Tears, Barbies, Chatty Cathy! Paper dolls – YES! The Betsy McCall ones that would show up in McCalls magazine every month. Movie stars – Janet Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds. Girls – modern & old-fashioned. After a while, I drew & made my own – loved coloring in the clothes with colored pencils (before felt-tipped markers appeared on the scene). Made the dolls out of oak tag so they’d last – even made stands for them!

I still have my two Ginny dolls, and the little case with their clothes and shoes. The clothes hung on little hangers. One outfit was a dark blue velvet skating outfit with tiny white skates. Also I loved paper dolls, would make them clothes by tracing around and then coloring them. Do kids even play with paper dolls these days? They were so much fun.

Does anybody remember the Betsy McCall paper dolls that were in each issue of McCall’s magazine? My other paper doll sets were Dinah Shore and Annette. My friend had Gisele McKenzie. I also had a real Betsy McCall doll, about 8 inches tall. I had a “model” doll that pre-dated Barbie, was a little smaller and had a less exaggerated figure. She looked a little bit like Marilyn Monroe or Kim Novak. My Baby dolls were Betsy Wetsy and Tiny Tears. I had a ballerina doll with jointed legs.

I had a Ginny Doll and remember she came with her own case. That case had hangers for hanging up her clothes and drawers for other stuff. Funny, I was just talking to a bunch of Bronxites about dolls the other day. I also had a Tiny Tears, and a Betsy Wetsy.

Betsy McCall would come once a week with two brand new outfits in McCall womens magazine. I remember just waiting for mom to finish reading so I could cut out that doll I had a whole paper grocery bag just full of betsy and her outfits

For some reason when you mentioned the cutouts, I had a fleeting memory of the name “Betsy McCall”. I think that was the name of mine.
