I guess I will be considered…

I guess I will be considered the “old fogey” compared to those who have submitted their messages here. I found this site by accident and read all the letters posted here. I was born Oct 24,1921 in the very old original Bronx Hospital on corner Fulton and 169th St. It originally was a beer brewers mansion. Lived at 813 E 170th St (which does not exist anymore) around the corner from the Loews Boston Road Theatre. Schools: PS40, PS61, PS98, Morris H. S. The Bronx will always remain the great passion of my life. The memories that have been stated by others here are equal to mine. Its not easy to erase the past when it was the best time of our lives. and I grew up during the depression whose only silver lining was that folks had more respect and showed more kindest to each other. That we had less is the reason we created those great games like stickball, stoopball, johnny on a pony, kick the can, hide-go-seek, even potsie, I played that too. Nice talking to “ya old Bronxsites” and thanks for the memories Max

To pugnace on DISH …

To pugnace on DISH DISH, D-I-S-H, DISH, D-I-S-H. When you messed up, you figured out what you actually messed up on, the word DISH, the letter D, I, S, or H. If you messed up on the letter D, you had to jump something that was like Double Dutch, only I forget what it was called – It’s like Double Dutch, but the enders turned the rope the opposite direction. You would count how many times you jumped till you messed up. (The person who got the highest number won the round) If you messed up on the letter I, the two double dutch ropes would be held flat along the ground by the enders, and they would move them together, then apart, then together. You would jump and land with your legs together when the ropes were apart, and then jump and land with your legs apart when the ropes were together, again counting until you mess up. If you messed up on the letter S, you got to jump with just a single rope, but on “Speedies” — which was really fast. If you messed up on the letter H, you got to jump with just a single rope, but it was held high off the ground (as high as the enders could hold it, really). If you messed up on DISH – you got to choose which one you wanted to do. Hope that helps!

To L on the Pink Pajamas…

To L on the Pink Pajamas song: I wear my Pink Pajamas in the summer when it’s hot. I wear my flannel nightie in the winter when it’s not. And sometimes in the springtime and sometimes in the fall. I jump into my little bed with nothin’ on at all. That’s the time you oughta see me. That’s the time you oughta see me. That’s the time you oughta see me. When I jump into my little bed with nothin’ on at all. Of course, when we sang it, we would change the chorus to: That’s the time you oughta see her. (and point to one of our friends) This brought on the second chorus: Nosey, Nosey what’s it to you. Nosey, Nosey what’s it to you. Nosey, Nosey what’s it to you. If I jump into my little bed with nothin’ on at all?

Thanks for all of the great information. I think I finally have enough information for my Girl Scout Brownie Troop. I have been racking my brain trying to remember how we played Chinese jumprope. It was about to drive me nuts. Thanks for giving me my memory back. At 46 the game was really under some cobwebs!! What a relief!! Now if I could just remember some of the rhymes we sang. All I can remember is: “I like coffee, I like tea, I’d like (name) to jump in with me me” That is when there are two jumpers. Is that Double Dutch? We played this kind of jumprope in Miami Fla in the 60’s.

The rest of Miss Suzy(to me it was always Miss Lucy) is “the boys and girls are kissing in the D,A,R,K, D,A,R,K, D,A,R,K, dark, dark, dark!” Does anyone know the words to Miss Lucy(or Suzy) had a baby, she named him Tiny Tim? or My little playmate, come out and play with me?

I am an artist and plan on creating an art piece made up of all kinds of hopscotch boards. I’m interested in different ways people made their boards. For example, I plan on making one out of sand, one of twigs, and one of cloth. Do you have any other ideas on what I could use to create these boards. In some boxes I’m going to use words and photos instead of numbers. Any ideas or stories about this game would be helpful. Thank you
