I grew up in West New York,…

I grew up in West New York, NJ. I lived by St. Mary’s Church on the northwest side of town. Growing up in the late 70’s we used to play “bottle caps”. We had a board that was carved right into the street at the entrance to the park. It was painted blue with red boxes. Very professional. We used to hang out there all day playing. We used bottle caps filled with crayon and pennies for added weight. Some of also melted metal to make’em real heavy. We basically played the same way as the rules on this site state, but we had an interesting twist. We played with what was called “sweeping”. If you landed in a box and someone was outside of that box less than a hand laid flat on the ground away you could litterly take that person cap and sweep it down the block. We also had “chucking” and “sewering”. Chucking was just basically picking up the other persons cap and throwing it a block away or onto the church roof. Sewering was when you swept someones cap into the sewer. Big fun. I used to love it. Went through a lot of caps though. I haven’t seen anyone playing it in a long time. I’m glad people remember such a great game. Also, surrounding 13 was what we called the “pit”. No number just P in each box, so no bonus for knocking anyone out.

I grew up in the early 60’s…

I grew up in the early 60’s on Lacombe Avenue in the Castle Hill Avenue projects in the Bronx. We were privilaged enough to have a skully (skelly) board neatly painted in yellow on the playground area outside. We experimented with a myriad of bottle cap types and fillers. The best “shooters” were the little white (soft) plastic prescription bottle tops. (This pre-dates child-proof caps.) Since the precription bottle caps were much lighter than metal bottle caps, we would weight each of them down with a penny and then fill the cap up to the top with candle or crayon wax. When the wax dryed, we would rub the top of the cap on the ground until it was super-smooth. The plastic precription bottle caps were the best shooters. When you would shoot one, it would ride smoothly along the ground, travel farther than a metal bottle cap, and, with the weight of the penny, it had enough weight to smash a competitor’s cap a mile away. I moved to Long Island, NY when I was 12 and miss playing skully.

Thank you for creating this site. I grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn in the early 70’s and have many fond memories of playing skully. While reminising with old friends about all the games we played, I decided to search on the internet. Thank you for clearing up our fuzzy memories of all the rules. I plan on marking up my driveway and practicing my skills again.

I grew up in Long Beach…

I grew up in Long Beach on Long Island in the early 60s. As I recall the Pinsie Pinky was .19 and the Spaldeen .29 The Spaldeen was more durable but the Pinky really flew if you hit it on the nose with a good stickball bat. Now I have a 14 year old and we live in Mission Viejo Califonia. I don’t understand it, he’s a Yankee fan and loves to play stickball with me at least twice a week as long as my 51 year old arm can take it. I had to have relatives from NY send us a real stckball bat from Spalding and a few dozen balz. These are great memories to share and make with him. …Tom

I grew up in Boston (Charlestown)…

I grew up in Boston (Charlestown) in the 60’s. We played half ball with two players up against the doctor’s building near the monument. It was a solid 3 story brick building with just a few windows on the side of the street where we played. It was a great game because you only needed two kids and you could get a ball fairly cheap at Connie’s down the street. We’d cut a pimple ball in half and play for hours. Our rules were a hit to the opposite sidewalk was a single. Up to the first floor was a double, second floor a triple and third floor a homer. You could catch the ball off the building and it was an out. Or, you could play a one bounce rule and it was still an out. We usually used an old broomstick and threw some tape around one end for a grip. We’d always get in trouble because the doctor’s receptionist sat at the window and we’d inevitably slam one into it several times during the course of the afternoon. I don’t think we ever tried too, but it just happened over the course of the game. She was always yelling at us or telling our mothers to stop us from scaring the patients. 🙂 Those days bring back fond memories of living in the city and spending hot summer afternoons whacking around a half ball like our favorite RedSox players did at Fenway. Glad to see that some people are still keeping the memories of that game going after all these yrs. Thanks!

I grew up on E40th between Farragut and Glenwood and so did my dad and all his brothers..we went to PS 198 but they went off to St Vincents..we all went to the park for the sprinklers and to smash bottles in the big playing field and to watch the serious athletes on the basketball courts. He remembers the pool before Pathmark – I only remember the store, but he claims it cost a dime to get in and his parents couldn’t afford it!

How cute to find this site! I grew up playing scully in Brooklyn in the 50’s. I live in CA now and from time to time I’ve tried to describe the game and the caps to friends thinking there must be SOMEONE who would know what I was talking about and share my nostalgic enthousiasm – so now how cute to find you all here. Someone mentioned go carts. What I remember is using the wheels from old roller skates and attaching them to a 2x4ish piece of wood, which then attached to a wooden crate with some kind of handles and we rode them like scooters…

CarolT’s comments brought back a flood of memories. I grew up on West 65 Street in Manhattan and recall walking from Amsterdam Avenue up to Broadway to get the next day’s Daily News and Daily Mirror. In fact, many times (these days) I pick up a News and a Post, put my money on the counter, and tell the clerk, “I have a News and a Mirror.” Old habits die hard.

I grew up on 172nd Street (145 Audubon Avenue)1948-1966. That was a time when you’d wait for the Daily News and Daily Mirror to “come up” around 9pm, especially on Saturday night. I loved to play jacks while sitting on the stoop. I recently went back to the old neighborhood, the stoops are gone. The parapet on 145 Audubon and some of the other buildings have been removed. Incarnation Convent has stood up well over the years.

Hi nynmary, Joe Rivera here. In my teen years, I grew up on Grand Avenue just off Fordham Road. That was from 1976 through 1980. We used to shop at Alexanders on Fordham Road. I enjoyed the Valentine Theater along with the Paradise Theater on the Grand Concourse. That may be before your time perhaps? Joe
