I came to this site, hoping to find the first line to a verse — someone typed it here, but the first line is still missing. ?? something-something-something-something ?? I met my boyfriend at the candy store. He bought me ice-cream, he bought me cake, he brought me home with a belly-ache. Mamma, Mamma, I’m so sick. Call the doctor – quick, quick, quick. Doctor, Doctor, will I die? Count to five and you’ll be alive. 1-2-3-4-5. I’m alive. 6-7-8-9-10. I’m dead again. But the missing first line is driving me crazy. Here’s a game we’d play where you would do these things actions to another person (on the back, or head, or whatever) and try to almost hypnotize them. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate on what I’m saying. People are dying, little boys are crying, concentrate. Concentrate on what I’m saying. Crack an egg on your head and let the yolk spill down, let the yolk spill down, let the yolk spill down. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate on what I’m saying. People are dying…. Stick a knife in your back and let the blood run down, let the blood run down, let the blood run down. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate on what I’m saying. People are dying…. There were other versus too — but at the end you would sing: Put a rope around your neck and pull it, pull it. And, if the person was truly concentrating through the whole thing, they would subconsciously lean back when you were pretending to pull the rope. Now that I think about it — it’s a really morbid game.

Reporting from Parkchester…

Reporting from Parkchester in the 60’s. We played in the courtyard of the U-shaped PS126. Singles, doubles, triples by hitting the opposite wall above the windows of each level. A narrow band below the roof was a home run, but on the roof was an out, for the ball was lost, and the batter had to run down to the candy store to buy a new Spaldeen ($.25?). If nobody had money, the game was over. My best stickball story is from the Saturday afternoon when I was having such a blast playing that I forgot my altar boy assignment for the 5:00PM mass at St. Raymond’s. My mom was so ripped when I strolled home at 7:00PM that I had to go to three consecutive masses the next day. From humiliation came responsibility, I guess. Great website, great memories from the Bronx.

Great site. I’m amazed at the Y2K price of a 2-bit Spaldeen ! Wonder if Toys R Us have them. I’m tempted to ask for one at what passes as a “candy store” these days but I don’t think the Indian or Pakistani gent would know what I’m talking about. Speaking of which, I did not see mention of the “Hindu”. This was when the ball took an ersatz bounce on an omni-present rock or broken bottle fragment. It resulted in a “do over” unless the offense could convince the defense that it was not a Hindu but a lack of fielding prowess that caused the fielding error. In the same vein was the “Windsie” (ball trajectory altered by elemental forces of nature) or “Interference” (ball hit tree limb, car antenna, passerby, etc.). Well, so long for now. I’m off to get a “for 2 cents, plain”. Rich Badagliacca

We always used Spaldeens in the Bronx– One day, Willie’s candy store had Pennyslvania Pinkies for sale — no spaldeens! We bought one to play SLUG with — it was horrible. Later we did the Spaldeen/PP test — droppping them both to the ground at the same time. Spaldeen won — it just had that extra zip to it!

Hi, Until I was…

Hi, Until I was 7, my family lived at 3211 Park Avenue, on the corner of E. 161st. I started school at Sacred Heart in Highbridge (actually I went to the annex of Sacred Heart, St. Eugene’s) because I was too young to go to St. Angela Merici (our parish). In 1961 we moved to Pelham Bay where I lived in the “Co-op” on Hutchinson River Parkway. High School: St. Catharine Academy, Class of 71 and Lehman College, class of 75. The Bronx was a great place to grow up. We played Punchball (I was VERY good for a GIRL!) and Ring-a-levio. My brothers played stickball all the time around the corner on 163rd Street. Does anyone remember the rides that came around in the summer? My favorite was the Half Moon which rocked back and forth, higher and higher. I distinctly remember being on that ride and hearing the song “Shimmy Shimmy Coco Bop” Strange!!! When I moved to Pelham Bay, my friends and I hung out on “the corner” (Buhre and Pilgrim Avenue) outside of Joe’s Candy Store. Basically, we did nothing but hang around and drink egg creams (with a pretzel!) My friends from the corner are still my best friends although we’re scattered all over the country now. It’s fun looking back.

I can picture a brand new spaldeen vividly today, almost smell it. What a great feeling to go to the local “candy store” and buy a new spaldeen. Always preferable to a pensy pinky, which were also good.We used spaldeens in stickball, punchball, fungo, slapball, A’s-up,stoopball, and different “box games”-boxball, box baseball, five boxes, hit the penny, etc., in Bayside, Queens. As far as Johnny Pump goes, it brings to mind the old game “Johnny on the Pony”. I would love to buy some spaldeens, if there is a place to order them, I’d like to know.

As a Brooklyn and Queens kid of the 50’s, I have to cast a vote for the one and only ball that any repected kid would use in my neighborhoods. You bought a Spaldeen (At Uncle Milty’s Candy Store). Period. That other ball would be like using some artsy fartsy chocolate syrup for an egg cream instead of U-Bet. And nobody bought a stickball bat. I couldn’t believe when they started selling them at the local stores!
