Hi. Growing up there were…

Hi. Growing up there were 2 rhymes that started with “Miss Lucy”. One was “Miss Lucy had a steamboat. The steamboat had a bell.” and continued on from there. For kids growing up in the 70’s, it was a BIG deal to do this one, because the endings to all the lines were “dirty words” that were actually the first syllables to normal words that started off the next line. For instance, to finish the first verse and start the second one…”Miss Lucy went to Heaven and the steamboat went to Hell {end of verse 1} {start of verse 2} “O operator, please give me number 9.” Making it a very long-drawn out “Hello”. Again, very tame by today’s standards but back then, very risque. The OTHER Miss Lucy went, “Miss Lucy had a baby, she named it Tiny Tim. She put him in the bathtub to see if he could swim.” HOWEVER, I don’t remember the rest of this one. Does this sound familiar to anyone? If so, help would be appreciated.

To Sharon in re 1, 2, 3, alera. I remembered my sisters playing this game in the early 60’s in The Bronx. I always thought it was >> 1, 2, 3 A lariat (a cowboy’s rope). Maybe that’s how they convinced me to play a girl’s game

Has anyone ever heard of a jack game referred to as around the world? When I was growing up it referred to bounceing the ball, picking up the jacks and circleing the ball befor it hit the ground again.

I seem to remmember “All The Girls In France” slightly differedntly: All the girls in France Do the Hula-Hula Dance And the way they shake is enough to kill a snake when the snake is dead they put bullets in its head with a final sigh they put diamonds in its eyes when they pull them out then the snake begins to shout! Actually, I’ve been looking for the ‘definative’ version of this song for some time. If anyone knows any other versions please let me know. -JoeK.

CHINESE JUMPROPE RULES I…

CHINESE JUMPROPE RULES I REMEMBER: Different people have different styles of it, i remember… when i played it we didn’t have any songs or chants going on, but people would chant their traditional order of stepping. The one I knew went: “In, Out, Side to Side, In, Out, On!” In: both feet inside Out: both feet outside Side to Side: both feet on either side of one long side of the jumprope, then on the other On: both feet on the opposite long sides of the jumprope. After passing one level, the setup of the jumprope would switch. If i remember correctly, the order went something like this: (the names might not be the real ones) Rectangle – each holder’s feet shoulder-width apart Two Feet – two feet together One Foot – jumprope only goes around one foot of each holder Pizza – one holder does Rectangle, the other One Foot, creating a triangle shape X’s – like rectangle, but with twisting the rope to make an X shape instead of a box Back and Forth – the holders would move their legs back and forth, making the jumprope move Shakesies – the holders shake their legs so that the jumprope moves randomly After going through those levels (i think there were more but i can’t remember them, although i think most of the names ended in “-ies”), the holders would raise the jumprope to higher levels, such as to the knee. Then you would have to do the whole thing all over again, but double-tapping at each step. If you got through all of that, too, you would get to triple-tapping, etc.

I found a chinese jumprope today at a garage sale. It came with a book. It doesn’t have the chants in it, but I remember this one: Itsy, me, sha,she loco, hotsy yachtcy kill it! When you say the words, “kill it”, that is when you should be stepping on the rope with both feet.

I played Hopscotch in Woodhaven, Queens in the late 50’s-early 60’s. We used pebbles but we also made our posties out of soda bottle caps flatten in the street. We tossed the cap into the road and waited for big trucks to come and flatten them. This was a big no-no according to our parents and we usually got in trouble for doing it since it required that we run into the road to retrieve the posty. Mary
