I grew up in downtown Jersey…

I grew up in downtown Jersey City in the late 50’s around Montgomery and Varick Streets, a block away from Van Vorst Park. This was my favorite game growing up! We called the game “street checkers.” We either used checkers from a checker set, or screw top bottle caps filled with tar that had softened up in the hot summer sun. We didn’t flick the top with a finger, but squeezed it out between the thumb and index finger like a marble. We had a 15 number board, with odd numbers from 1-9 up one side, even numbers from 2-10 down the other, 11 and 13 on top opposite 12-14 at bottom. 15 was a small box in a larger box with four lines connecting the corners of the small box with the corners of the large box. The spaces within were poison but the lines were safe. If you landed in a poison area, you lost a turn. While playing, if you hit an opponent’s cap, you advanced a number. You had to go from 1 to 15, then back down to 1. After that you shot into one of the poison spaces, became “poison,” and could kill off any remaining players. I still have one of my tar filled caps on a little knick knack shelf in my apartment.

Does anyone remember playing Giant Steps? And I had great fun playing punchball, red light green light, red rover, potsy, stoop ball, I declare war on …., hit the penny, hot potato and other city kid games. We really used our imaginations, got lots of exercise, and learned how to get along with others and organize ourselves. I feel sorry for the kids today. They are so programmed by adults.

It’s Miss Lucy had a baby. She named it Tiny Tim. She put it in the bathtub to see if it could swim. It drank up all the water. It ate up all the soap. It tried to eat the bathtub but it wouldn’t go down it’s throat. Miss Lucy called the doctor. Miss Lucy called the nurse. Miss Lucy called the lady with the alligator purse. Mumps! said the doctor. Measles! said the nurse. Chicken pox! said the lady with the alligator purse. Get out you crazy doctor. Get out you crazy nurse. Get out you crazy lady with the alligator purse.

We played that game, but called it Russian Handball. e used a pink rubber ball and threw it against a wall. With each number from 1-10 there were certain things you had to do. Like 1-throw it against the wall, clap and catch it, 2- throw it against the wall, clap twice and catch it etc… I have been trying to find out all the rules for a long time. I have completely forgotten them. I am a 5th grade teacher and I was trying to explain to my students about the game. I happened to find the pink rubber balls in a store, bought one and since then have been trying to find someone who remembers all the steps/. Help!!!Anyone!!!!
