Looking at the spanish list and the first game is exactly the same as a english traditional game called oranges and lemons, with the rhyme being all about the bells around london and the capture including a threat to chop of your head, you the choose secretly betwen oranges and lemon, join the appropriate line and end with a tug of war exactly the same as on your site. I wonder which country first played this and if they use the same tune?

Does anyone remember the little back rhymes that some people used to do? My girls are learning “Criss Cross” (draw “X” on partner’s back) Apple Sauce (rub hands down back, palms open) Spiders crawling up your back (Crawl fingers up) Don’t sneeze (finger under partner’s nose) Cold knees (tickle partner’s knees) Now you got the shiver-ies! (tickle partner’s neck) Anyone know any others?

The nylon/sock game goes like this: You take the end of a nylon or a knee sock and put the ball in and stand up against a cement wall and swing the ball so it hits the wall on your right and then your left and on certain words you lift your right leg (or left if you’re left handed) and hit the ball on the wall under your leg and here is the song you sing (the one I knew anyway) (lift leg on the word sir all the time) Hello Hello Hello Sir Are you coming out Sir No Sir Why Sir Because I caught a cold sir Where did you catch the cold sir Up in the north pole sir What were you doing there sir Catching polar bears sir How many did you catch sir One Sir Two Sir Three Sir That’s enough for me sir G’bye G’bye G’bye Sir See you in July Sir Eating Christmas Pie Sir!

I went to grade school in the late 30’s just prior to WWII. I remember bouncing balls to rhymes similar to jump-rope rhymes. One in particular went “1-2-3- O-lari, 4-5-6- O-lari 7-8-9-O-lari, 10- O-lari-oh. Each time you would sa o-Lari, you would bounce the ball under your leg. Does any one know if this is the whole rhyme? Does any one else remember such and activity?

Another version of the “o’lary” or O’Leary rhyme– One,two, three o”lary My first name is Mary If you think it’s necessary Look it up in the dictionary. We would sing this while bouncing an Indian rubber ball, and we would lift our leg over the ball at the end of each line–ie—o’lary, then Mary etc. When we were going to play tag, or hide and go seek we used to put our “dibs” up–(both hands made into fists) and one person would go around the circle and hit each person’s fist with hers, while we all sang “the song”. This was to determine who was “it” at the start of the tag, or hiding-go seek game. One such song was—“My mother gave your mother a punch in the nose. What colour was the blood? The person who’s fist was last hit—on the word blood–would call out a colour–ie-yellow-and the first person would spell the colour out-hitting each fist as she spelled it. When the final letter was said–ie-‘W”-the song would finish—as—“and you are IT. Funny song for kids to sing eh?? Did anyone ever do this type of song. We had quite a few different ones actually. I grew up in Ottawa, Canada–long time ago.

I grew up in Chicago and I remember that we always played Double Dutch and Chinese Jumprope with rhyming songs. I wish I remembered all of them because we would finish one rhyme and go right into singig another one as long as the jumper hadn’t missed yet. There had to be at lease 7 or 8 rhymes that we knew by heart. With Chinese Jumprope we would sing: Jump in jump out jump side to side jump on jump in jump out.

It’s been seven years, but…

It’s been seven years, but I’m writing in response to V Pesante {I haven’t tried her email} and I’m not sure if she’ll see this. But for those who are interested in this rhyme, I also grew up in South Jersey {Atlantic City, NJ}. I remember learning this song in the 1950s from a vacation Bible school teacher who was from Georgia. I’ve phonetically spelled that word “Zoodio”, but I’ve seen it written “Zudio”, or “Zodiac”. We played this game {or danced this dance} the same way as V Pesante described in the first part of her comment-two partners stood facing each other, we criss-crossed arms holding both of our partners hands and did what I call a see-saw, back & forth motion to the beat. Our knees were slightly bent when we did this motion. On the words “step back sally” we jumped back to the beat. On the words “walkin through the alley” we continued singing but strutted across the large room and at the end of the song we were arbitrarily standing in front of a new partner. And then song would start again from the beginning. The words that I recall were the very much like those posted above, but we sang “Step back, Sally Sally Sally” and “Walkin’ down the alley alley”. I don’t think we sang the next part, though that “Big man tryin’ to hypnotize me” is awfully familiar to me for some reason or the other. When I read that line, what popped into my head was the line “A big Black man tryin to hynotize me”. Btw, I’m African American, if that matters :o} I found another version of this song on at http://www.peterandellen.com/lyrics/zudio.htm . That version starts with the Here we go Zudio verse but then gives this verse: Walkin’ thru the alley, what do I see? I see a great big man from Tennessee. I betcha five dollars that you can’t do this: To the front, to the back To the side side side. To the front, to the back To the side side side. My mama called the doctor and the doctor said “Ooh aah, I got a pain in my side” “Ooh aah, I got a pain in my toe” “Ooh aah, I got a pain in my tummy” “Ooh aah, I got a pain in my head.” -snip- [the verse here we go zudio verse is repeated, and then there’s a slightly different version of the “I got a pain” verse: My mama called the doctor and the doctor said “Ooh aah, I got a pain in my chin” “Ooh aah, I got a pain in my knee” “Ooh aah, I got a pain in my neck” “Ooh aah, I got a pain in my belly button.” -snip- That also sounds familiar too me. It may be because I’ve mis-remembered what I knew of the song, or those other parts sound like other rhymes that I used to sing or have read.
