RE Finkelstein’s “Time”…
RE Finkelstein’s “Time” post. I also remember playing a game called Time in the early 60’s in NE Philly. Very vague on the rules though. Sorta remember it had something to do with guessing a TV show, song, or movie. Not sure what the purpose was, but I remember counting the time . . .One O’clock, Two O’clock, Three O’clock etc. Does anyone else remember more about this game?

Anyone looking for rules…
Anyone looking for rules to Chinese Jump Rope could consult a book which gives all kinds of diagrams and all kinds of rules and variations. It’s called “Chinese Jump Rope” by Sheree S. Marty. The publisher is Sterling Publishing Company (New York); publication date was 1994. I found it at the library. By the way, thanks to Jacqui for remembering the name `Yogi’ and “trials… just in case I don’t make it…” — I had completely forgotten about that. The hours we spent playing that game. What a great memory.
Around my neighborhood they…
Around my neighborhood they would block off the streets and turn ON THE fire hydrants so we could all cool off. Way before Air Conditioners. They would put a hollowed out garbage can…bottom knocked out…over the hydrant and it would raise into a spray. They did this so the little kids wouldn’t be picked up by the water pressure and deposited on their heads. Guess this is my problem, since lots of times I hit the ground when I got too close to the mouth of the hydrant. Those were the good old days. Later on in the years that followed…this was not permitted by the Fire Department, and a permit was needed to turn on the water and then only a trickle would immerge. By that time, the good old days were over.

> I “invented” the glass bottle cap I knew it would be someone from the Bronx. The game was just so much more “evolved” there. Only a Bronxite would use the term “technology” in reference to a skully cap. Your sewer cover description of cap production is how I did it too, but now that I have a Home Depot credit card, I went out and bought a glass cutter to see if it would facilitate the process. Amazingly, it kinda works! -Hugh McNally / Bronx native / Skully player
I “invented” the glass bottle…
I “invented” the glass bottle cap described in earlier messages (i.e. the glass ring at the lip of a bottle which can be broken off if scraped just right over a sewer cover) Actually, it was discovered by accident, but as soon as we saw the glass ring we knew it would be perfect for Skully. This amazing discovery occurred on Walton Ave. in the Bronx circa 1965. Of course, it is possible that others developed this technology independently. Does anyone recall seeing a glass bottle cap in use pre-’65?
