After reading some of the comments by some of the ladies on skipping rope, they shoul”d take a look at my web site on jetomatic.com & they will see a new & innovative type of jump rope that requires no hands to operate it. It requires only one person to operate it. Complete automatic & is water propelled & spray”s a refreshing mist of water around the jumper. The rope stops turning upon contact with the jumper. The speed of the rope is determined by the regulator on one of the poles. Operates on regular home water supply and garden hose, & is mobile. nothing like it, It is also great summer fun for young and elderly alike.Itcan be set for one revolution per second or much more depending on preference of the jumping party better yet it is made in the U,S.A.TO send comments after viewing site E.Mail to jetomatic [at] jetomatic [dot] com or click on E.Mail on web pages address sheet. Hot peas and butter! The choice game for a boring hot NY summer hanging around the block. It was even better if we played without our shirts on! YEOUCH!

This is mostly hearsay, but I do know that this game was played in inner-city Wilmington, Delaware ( I have many friends from there) in the mid-80’s under the name “relievio” and games lasted several days, and encompassed several square miles of territory. Each team had a home base, and “teams” would remain constant throught a summer, with challenges being issued from one team to another and lasting until one team or the other was finally all caught. Players had “positions” to play, and teams typically encompased ages from 6 to 16. I grew up in southern New Hampshire, and we had a similar game called “team tag” (OK, we’re bland and had no creativity). It was like the New York version of “ringaleavio” with a single team being “it” though there was no real hiding, since we played in an open field. Players were freed from, Jail via a single tag, and a whole line of players could form so long as one was actuall topuching “jail.”

When I was a young boy from the ages of about 9 years old until 13 I lived in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA. Our neighborhood was full of young boys around the same age. While we played a lot of basketball on the street, football in the empty lot, and soccer in my back yard (until we broke a window the third time), my favorite activity was playing in the woods. In particular, the best was building a tree fort. I call it a fort, not a house, as we were there to protect our turf from the imaginary bad guys and the real ones, our older brothers! We of course, had a pad lock to secure the entry and a password was necessary if someone was already in it. We built the fort out of extra wood we gathered from the lumber yard in the area. Actually, thinking back on it this was quite a feat for 6 young men. We were probably 400 yards deep into the woods behind the nearest street and daily lugged our tools and supplies. We eventually got electricity by running the longest set of connected extension cords one may imagine. Don’t tell anyone, but we connected the line into an outside plug of the nearest home. We would stay in the woods all day long. We fished for salemanders in the creek, ate green apples from the tree of a little old lady who lived deep in the woods at the end of a dirt road. Well, actually we ate the apples until she scared us off with a shotgun full of rock salt – no foolin’! Ouch! We also slept in the fort after much begging to our parents. We eventually became friendly to the old woman by picking and giving her wild flowers. From then on, she gave us lemonade all summer long!!!

We played jacks at the edge of the ballfield in the playground at the corner of W.115th Street and Belmont. As I rember it, we only played jacks after we had a vigorous workout on the handlebars, the swings and teeter totters and while we were having a carton of cold chocolate milk which was deliverd to the playground every day in the summer. This may have been just after WWII. I was never really very good at jacks, but my Sister Nancy was the expert. Recognizing her superiority, I usually gave up before the game was even over….

My first kiss was NOT particularly pleasant but it was memorable. I think I was about thirteen or fourteen years old. This guy from the neighborhood who was about my age was always making racy comments around me, which I pretty much ignored. Late one summer night, I was walking home after hanging out with my friends and ran into the guy. He walked up to me, asked me if I’d ever been kissed and before I could reply, planted his lips on mine and stuck his yucky, sloppy tongue halfway down my throat. And then he walked away. At the time I thought, “if this is what kissing is about, I’m NEVER getting married!” We never mentioned it after that and I haven’t seen him in yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeears…… – webdiva

We played Ringaleavio almost every summer night in Arverne, Far Rockaway. Like Greg of Big Six Towers, I lived in a self-contained block of buildings with parks, benches, bushes and grassy areas in the middle. As soon as enough kids (boys & girls – mostly boys) showed up, 2 captains would choose teams and then one team would go out to hide while the other team waited 10 minutes or so. Generally, kids moved in small groups, although there were some slippery hard-cores who like to hide alone. The park bench that everyone started from, was the home base (jail). Kids were captured when someone had contact for the duration of saying; “caught caught Ringaleavio 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2-3.” They would be escorted back to the home base where they had to stay unless one of the hiders could get to the base uncaptured and yell; “HUMPFREE-ALL!” Incredible game . . . started around 7pm and usually went til about 9.

Where I grew Hopscotch was not only for girls, boys played too. The summer playgrounds had a tournment at the end of the summer. The boys that won ended up being the stars on the high school sports teams. Hopscotch was serious business for the boys. And by the way the boys almost always beat the girls.

This is a great suggestion – We will be participating in the Back to Brooklyn Festival on June 13 – see our coverage of it! We would like to attend some others this summer. Please send us an e-mail to discuss this more. Anyone else – feel free to add ways to go about this – particularly in other Northeastern cities besides NY. Thanks micknpez [at] streetplay [dot] com
