How about Steal the Bacon…….

How about Steal the Bacon…. To start someone would throw a can as far as they could everyone would run in the opposite direction to hide, except for one person designated to slowly go get the can, bring it back to base and then try to find us and bring us to base/jail. Simply by tapping the can and saying “tap, tap, tap, I see ______ hiding behind the red car” That person would have to return to the base. The other hiders would try to free those found by racing to the can and kicking it, while the finder was searching for the rest of us. It was great fun..especially having the “finder” and “hider” racing towards the can to tap it or kick it.

Oh yeah, don’t forget about Duck, duck, goose. They actually played this with dogs at a dog training class I was in! I think they called it dog dog bone or something, same basic rules, except you have to heel your dog around the circle, and all the other dogs were on sit-stays next to their owners, facing out towards you…

I forgot to mention, we used to play Red Rover at recess with the whole class (18-25 kids) or sometimes with more than one grade of people, making a loooong game!

The way we played Red Rover when I was in gradeschool (not so very long ago 🙂 was the two teams would be on each side, hands linked. Then someone from one team would shout “Red rover, red rover let ____(name of kid) come over!” Then the kid they named had to run over and try to break the chain (no going under allowed). Usually they know where the weakest link is… If you don’t get through, you have to get in the chain. The game ends when one team has everyone. I think if you DID break through, you would get to go back to the other team? Or maybe you sit out the rest?

“Saloogie” would start when one kid would grab another kid’s hat, yell “Saloogie” and toss it around. If he tried to get it back, we’d yell “Monkey-in-the-middle”. I remember an old Mad Magazine that used the term that way.

I remember playing a game called “Suicide” back at P.S. 99 in the Midwood part of Brooklyn. Whoever had the ball would throw it at the wall, and if someone caught it before it hit the ground the person who threw it would get an “automatic out.” If someone touched the ball and dropped it, that person would have to run towards the wall before they got pegged by someone. Getting pegged was another way to get out. Each out would spell “A-S-S.” Spell it and you had to leave the game. The last person left had the honor of pegging everyone else. There was nothing like being on the good side of that wall.

We played “kick the can”…

We played “kick the can” in Holland all the time. We call it “blikkietrap”. Basicly one kicks the can and names someone who must fetch it. The others hide. The person who has to get the can (or soccer ball in our case) places it in a central point and goes to look for the missing kids. But the kids can make their way back to the can without being found by the one who looks. That’s the game. The kids have to make their way back to the can (or ball) before they are found by the one who looks for them. If you are found you’re the person who must get the can in the next game.

There used to be a game called error. A bunch of us would throw a spaldeen against the wall and catch it. The person who misses it would the have to run and touch the wall before someone picks up the ball and hits them with it. The game continues until someone makes 5 errors thus spelling the word error. That person would get “booties”. Booties is done by the loser leaning aginst the wall with his rear end protuding, while the other players are across the street trying to hit the loser with the ball in the buttocks. Hence, the name booties. Error suicide is a variation of error. The only difference is instead of getting hit with the ball the person gets punched in the body until he touches the wall.

My husband told me that a posting about a “girl game” was in the running around section, so I came looking. Not only that, but he knows I loved jacks as a kid and grew up in Chinatown, so he figured – ah – right up your alley. Anyway we played chinese jacks exactly the same way you did, only chinese mothers (and my mother) made the jacks just like little bean bags filled with rice. The rules are the same, but the materials different.
