I grew up in the Bronx and we played games like “Hot Peas And Butter and Johnny on the Pony” but does anyone remember “kick the Can?” Someone would throw a can as far as he could and the person that was “IT” would retrieve the can and get back to base as fast as he could, “backwards”, while the other kids would run and hide. The object of the game was for the kid that was “IT”, to find everyone while protecting the can from being kicked. The kid that was “IT” would spot a hiding kid and run back to the can and while tapping the can would yell out who he spotted and where the kid was, thus capturing the kid. If a kid, who was not caught, kicked the can, which would free all the kids that were caught and keep the kid that was “IT” still “IT”.

CHINESE JACKS!!! They’ve got to bring those back!!!! I spent almost the entire early 80s playing that game. If you’ve never heard of ’em, they were hard plastic rings, about the diameter of a dime, that came loose in a pack. The rings were split so that you could put the individual colored rings around a center ring. You fretted over the color of the rings in the pack you were selecting and you alternated the colored rings as you put them together to make pretty and unique combos. You would buy more packs to make the jacks denser. Not too dense though! They had to have enough floppiness as to not pop off of your hand and accidentally hit the ground while you were furiously tossing and catching them. If I remember correctly, you ended up with 5 jacks that almost looked sorta like today

Chinese Handball. We played against the wall of Pete`s Candy Store in Rosedale, Queens. During the late 50`s through the 1960`s Pete`s Candy Store was our handball court of choice. Of course we played Aces,or “A-s“ up … 🙂 … and we usually used a (spelled as it is pronounced) Spaldeene. The spaldeen really did hurt, sometimes leaving a welt. Yeah, some of the guys really threw hard, but fortunately their was only one loser in a group of up to 12 or more of us. Unfortunately, all the guys got to throw at the losers butt. 😉 If you were one of the, probably over 30 to forty players their at the time, I would sure like to see you here. My nick name at the time was, Rosie, Bloom, or worse. ;-a

I remember playing hopscotch with 8 boxes (no rounded top.) We used key chains to throw into each box but not to touch any of the lines or your turn is over. After you successfully hop thru all 8 boxes you continued back to the 1st box.Once that is completed we now played the 2nd half of the game called “potsy” which entailed hopping on 1 foot only! Also with the same rules of not steping on the lines. That’s how we played hopscotch in Bay Ridge Brooklyn in the 60’s.

Remember “Hill Dill Come Over My Hill”? One person was it in the center called out “Hill Dill Come Over My Hill” and all the other people would have to make it (run) to the other side without getting caught. If you got caught you were in the center with “it”. This was repeated until everyone was caught.

We used to play a game called “buck buck”. Consisted of 2 teams…one guy would lean against a wall. Next guy would bend over and put his shoulder into the 1st guys groin area (not what you’re thinking either) Each other guy would then bend over and place their head between the legs of the guy in front of him so all that was exposed really were the guys backs. Other team would then one by one run and jump on the backs of the other team. If the team jumping could not get all their members on or if a guy fell off or his foot touched the ground after he jumped on, they lose. If the down team caved in they lost and had to assume the same position for another round. Once all of the 2nd team had jumped on and no one caved in, one of the members of the top team would yell out, “Buck buck how many fingers up?” One of the bottom guys had to guess how many fingers was being held up. If they were wrong they were down again for another back pounding. If they guessed correct, the teams changes positions for the next game. It could be a very rough game. We played this in McKeesport, PA.

any one play 3 steps from Germany in bensonhurst in the fifties? my hubby was from 69th st. I played statue, red light, red rover and ball. but my bike and roller skates gave me freedom. the streets w4ere so much safer then. noone watched us, they just called us in for dinner. what great days those were.

Great Rich! You stole my thunder on “Hot Peas and Butter”. We called it “Hide the Belt” in South Philly. How about “Chase the White Horse”? Here the person who was “it” would kneel in the street on all fours. Someone would call a category (lets say “cars”) and you had to name a car model as you leap-frogged over the guy in the street. If you couldn’t name one you yelled out “chase the white horse” and the person who was “it” chased everyone else and captured the next victim. Sometimes you would have to go 3-4 rounds (lets say naming cars, baseball players, sodas, etc.) until the chase began!
