Where and when I grew up…

Where and when I grew up (Casper, Wy — mid to late ’40s were my main jack-playing years) Jacks were a very big thing for girls — there were even tournaments. Not sure who sponsored the tournaments — I was never good enough to qualify, but my big sister was. The official game was played with only six jacks, and we “flipped” to see who went first. Beginners could “flip” with two hands, but once you were experienced, you were expected to use only one. The “official” game included babies, baskets. upcast, downcast, halves, wholes, up-picking-daisies and down-picking-daisies (if I’m remembering correctly). I’m not sure I can explain any of these in text — they almost have to be demonstrated. Sometimes we played other additional sets, but the only one I can remember is “around the world.” Even my brother played jacks, but we all agreed that was a secret we’d never tell his friends. My kids grew up in Southern California, and Jacks wasn’t played there, though I taught them the game I grew up with, and they loved it — my son included. There was no stigma for him, since it wasn’t known as a “girl” game in CA — and I know it helped improve his eye-hand coordination.

I grew up in Queens during the 60’s we played skelly every day. Now I live in Long Island, no one has ever heard of skelly. I taught the kids in my Cub Scouts and they are hooked on it. Imagine a game with no batteries, of cartridges to buy!

I know this was written a long time ago but yes, it was just like the movies… I grew up in Brooklyn NY, Sheepshead Bay area and all I could remember was wanting to go play all the time… Would run home, eat and boom out to play for as late as I could get away with… Then home for dinner and TV… Ahhh Youth.

I grew up in West Baltimore and my friends and I played skully, especailly during the summer, almost everyday. This was during the 70s. We used for caps the tops from the plastic gallon milk jugs and the tops from certain liquor bottles, which we mainly found in alleys. The tops were made out of a sturdy plastic, which allowed us to melt the crayons and candles wax right into the caps. Also during heat waves, we would dig up asphalt from the streets and rooftops to fill in the caps.

What a great website! I was trying to think of the one two three alary game – and I think now I have all of them. We used to have ten tricks and they got harder as you went (clapsie, double clapsies, waterfall, etc.). Also to the lady from Toronto with the ball in the toe of a sock – I grew up in small town BC – we used to say “hello hello hello sir, can you come out to play, sir, no sir, why sir, because I have a cold sir, where did you get the cold sir, behind the kitchen door sir, etc.

Hi all, I grew up in Brooklyn (Flatbush to be exact) and graduated from Erasmus in 1958. Over the years I have tried to spread the beauty and elegance of our language only to be met by indifference and even disbelief. I hope the language is still strong and I’d like to confirm this by checking out my pronunciation with Brooklyners from my age group but also with younger speakers to see if things have changed. Please let me know if you agree or disagree with the following: 1.

I grew up in Brooklyn during the 60’s and 70’s. Skelly was a daily routine. My favorite caps were made with Crayola crayons (melted them right in my mothers frying pan (yikes). Once my older sister helped create a cap made with wax that looked like a target! It was the coolest cap ever.

Never hung out with him but, Christopher Walken was from where I grew up, in Astoria, Queens. His family owned, Walken’s Bakery (Great Jelly donuts LOL) on Broadway.

Hey everyone, I grew up around 165th and Gerard. School at PS 114. Then we moved to Jersey. Eventually I came back, to Knox Pl, just off Mosholu Pkwy. But left again.LOL. I remember playing stickball, curb ball and stoop ball all over the neighborhood. Some friends were Mike Gearty, Joe Marsicano.
