How about everybody holds their hands behind their back and then you start singing “Where is thumb-kin? Where is thumb-kin?” And first you bring out your right hand with thumb up “Here I am” And the left hand with thumb up “Here I am” Shake the right thumb “How are you today sir?” Shake the left thumb “Very well, I thank you” Move right thumb behind your back “Run away” Move left thumb behind your back “Run away” And you would repeat it for every finger on your hand. We used to play it in kindergarden in the Bronx

This is what we do with my toddler daughter: Round ball, round ball (while making a circle on her palm) Pull the chicky’s hair (tugging at her bangs) One slice, two slice (pretend chopping her arm, while holding her hand) Tickle under there (tickle under her arm)

My grandmother was born in Austria. She was Czeckoslavakian. There was a finger rhyming song she used to sing, but the only words I can remember are “dumatella, dumatella, dumatella. And even at that I’m not sure of the spelling. My mother would say it was about a mother squirrel chasing her young and then she would tickle our bellies. I would love to be able to teach my own grandchildren. Can anyone help? Thank you, Lisa lperry [at] columbus [dot] rr [dot] com
