Wow… I just stumbled across this page! What a trip- back in time.. Yep.. I, too, grew up in Fresh Meadows… right near the old Food Fair… there sure were 3 ice cream trucks… Vito drove the Bungalow Bar truck… (tastes like tar, the more you eat it, the sicker you are!).. We liked Vito, he gave out ice cream sticks, the Good Humor guy didn’t! But, he had the ‘premium’ ice cream bars with the chocololate ‘bar’ in the middle! There was also the Chow Chow Cup, Mister Softee, later on Hoodie (late comer ice-cream!)… and, the knife sharpener… the rides… (whip!) and.. Thursdays,Ciro the Fish man… who, I found ten years later, repainted his truck to sell hot dogs by Francis Lewis HS! (ice got to his hands!!!)…. What else- egg creams.. well, you can’t really make ’em right unless you have Fox’s U-bet!Ahhhhhhh.. the school yard at PS26! Anyone here got a Pensy Pinky?

RE Finkelstein’s “Time”…

RE Finkelstein’s “Time” post. I also remember playing a game called Time in the early 60’s in NE Philly. Very vague on the rules though. Sorta remember it had something to do with guessing a TV show, song, or movie. Not sure what the purpose was, but I remember counting the time . . .One O’clock, Two O’clock, Three O’clock etc. Does anyone else remember more about this game?

Around my neighborhood they would block off the streets and turn ON THE fire hydrants so we could all cool off. Way before Air Conditioners. They would put a hollowed out garbage can…bottom knocked out…over the hydrant and it would raise into a spray. They did this so the little kids wouldn’t be picked up by the water pressure and deposited on their heads. Guess this is my problem, since lots of times I hit the ground when I got too close to the mouth of the hydrant. Those were the good old days. Later on in the years that followed…this was not permitted by the Fire Department, and a permit was needed to turn on the water and then only a trickle would immerge. By that time, the good old days were over.

You’re talking about the Schwinn “Krate” series. There was an Orange Krate, Apple Krate (Red), and maybe some others. I remember Captain Kangaroo hawking them on his show when I was a kid. They’re highly sought after by collectors today; I’ve heard of some examples selling in the thousands! Me, I had the Ross Apollo 5-speed. It also had a stick shift and banana seat; not as fancy as the Schwinns, but a cool ride. I wish I had it today, although I’d look pretty silly riding it!

I remember in the mid 60’s a line of boys stingray bikes came out with a small wheel in the front, banna seat, sissybar and stick shift. I never had one but they were really cool and came in a variety of colors. The green color bike was named the “Pee Picker”. The yellow color bike was named the “Lemon Peeler”. Does anyone remember what the names of the other color bikes were?

did anyone else have trouble getting the parkie to open up and hand out the balls and other equipment (checkers and stuff like that)? there used to be 2-3 parkies in the house who would be playing cards and wouldn’t open up unless you got a mom to go over. our park was not too close so we didn’t go very often. we had see saws (see saw margery daw), sliding ponds (i’d forgotten that term!), monkey bars (wish they were still around), a ‘pool’ (just a bunch of sprinklers in a recessed area. the only way you got a ‘pool’ out of it was to plug the drains with tissues), skully board (bottle caps), sand pile and a big grassy area. it was up the hill from ps11. can’t remember the street name but the carmelite convent was up there, too. (da bronx) we did the swing tricks, too. one standing, one sitting, ducking under, standing up for maximum ‘pump’. would we kill our kids for doing this now? thanks for the memories!!!

We always used Spaldeens in the Bronx– One day, Willie’s candy store had Pennyslvania Pinkies for sale — no spaldeens! We bought one to play SLUG with — it was horrible. Later we did the Spaldeen/PP test — droppping them both to the ground at the same time. Spaldeen won — it just had that extra zip to it!

What’s up? My name is Kenya….

What’s up? My name is Kenya. I’m looking for instructions to a street-game we used to play called “SKELLEY”. I would appreciate it if someone would hook me up at this e-mail address. I used to live in the Rutland Plaza, on Rutland Rd., and I think it was East 95th St. I wasn’t that good but my friends Taurus, Telley, and Brian were. I’m trying to show my friends here in New Kensington, PA how to play. I know the basics; such as, shooting your top from box one to two, and so on, I need to know the actual rules, such as how does one get out of the middle once he is knocked in? ANYWAY THANKS………:)
