We are independent filmmakers,…

We are independent filmmakers, creating our first film as a labor of love, outside of regular jobs in Television. The documentary is based on the experience of families in the Catskill Mountains during it’s heyday (1920’s-80’s). There is no substantial bankroll. All of the individuals working on the project are actually doing it out of a common interest in the project or as a favor(associates and friends). We have been obtaining footage, letters, photographs and postcards from people through their mutual generosity, but mostly their shared desire to make a statement about this cultural experience. We pay all expenses to ship it, copy it, etc. We will send all masters back to you (in perfect condition!)following the duplication. As far as photos go, you can easily send JPEGS (High Resolution if possible). All people will be credited in the film. We have already received a generous amount of resources from people and we also have asked for releases from them) to protect all involved, including the people who donate their footage. At the present time we are collecting all of the above as well as setting up interviews with many of the “lifers”….If you know of any families or friends that spent time in the “borscht belt”, please pass this note along to them. We truly appreciate all of your assistance in this project. Please stay in touch! Sincerely yours, Nina Benzi/Evan Haiman Kippered Herring Productions 15 Baker Street Wayne, NJ 07470 kipperedherring [at] hotmail [dot] com

Playing bottle cap ball…

Playing bottle cap ball in a narrow gravel driveway next to a small store in Missouri, we’d stop for a refreshment–a Pepsi and a nickel bag of Planters peanuts. We’d pour the peanuts in the bottle of Pepsi. When we really got the craving, we’d buy a bottle of Grapette, which was only about 7 ounces of soda. But a bottle of Pepsi got you more for your dime. Hello. My name is Janet and I’m an activity coordinator at an Assisted Living home. Thursday will be sharing stories about our fathers. I wanted to try this out and make sure this message when through before I tell my participants about it. Testing–one, two.

The museums were a mecca for truants. It was the only place where you wouldn’t get questioned by security. they always thought you were with a class trip. Meet up with your crew on a cold day, when your funds were low. Truant officers were waiting for you at the cheap action movie theaters on 42nd. Spoof on the art pieces, imagine yourself from far away places. Good fun. The museum of natural history, art, in Manhattan and the one in Brooklyn. Guggenheim (if you could afford it) horticulture gardens, whatever (I can’t remember them all), people always seemed to smile at you when they saw you in those places. I guess they thought it was great that you took an interest in the “finer things in life”. Actually, in spite of myself, I did take a liking to museums for the rest of my life.

I fell in love with a Girl…

I fell in love with a Girl Named Honey in the late 60’s – we went to SBHS. I had to leave Brooklyn in a rush, went into the service and did not communicate with her until 2002 – she is still wonderful. If anyone questions love at first sight or any kind of true love, don’t – it will stand any test if your honest and loyal. I heard it said that her husband is a wonderful man, I know he is truly blessed. See, I now realize the value of the treasure I lost. But I also realize that the brief moments I held that treasure, changed me forever. From the time I met her Honey has been the best part of my heart, this has save my life on more than one occasion. Honey will always be special to me. I have been married for almost 23 years now and the only person on the face of the earth I love more than Honey is my wife. A Book I know well, talks about this, in part it says “Love does not look for its own interests – It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things – Love never fails – There remains faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” Cherish the people you love and who love you and never take love for granted. Brian and I used to be annoyed…

Brian and I used to be annoyed with each other. But over the summer we became great friends. But on Halloween that all changed. Lets just say we fell in teen love. That night I gave him a simple peck on the lips.(but that wase’nt even count, the type of kiss you give your mom, dad, or grandmother) but we started going out. I was in 8th grade at the time. He invited me to his house. No one else was there, just the 2 of us. We got caught up in a conversation about are band concert coming up. But after about 3 min. of talk are eyes met. We both quite talking in unison we leaned forward. We kept are eyes open intell are lips toeched. I was in heaven and put my heart into kissing him. When we pulled away he stared in my eyes and runned his hands through my hair. We are still going out and were in 9th grade. The first real kiss was not perfect in since of teniqe but in since of love and shock. We still laughe about it, I will never forget it.

I am 71 years old and and recently realized that my grandchildren don’t know how to play any of the games we played when I was little. I have bought a length of clothesline and, at Christmas, I’m going to take them outside and teach them to jump rope to some of the rhymes from your website. They brought back wonderful memories. Of course, I think I’ll be a “steady-ender” most of the time.
