Played in Philadelphia Pa. in late 70’s.We called it caps or poison.Yesterday, since the kids were out of school for just one day, bored out of thier minds.I introduced them to this game, just like me they loved it.It started with four kids,by the time I was finished tring to explain all the rules and finishing the first game. There now were nine kids waiting for the next game. Plus neighbors telling me how they played this game. So,I decided to see if there were any official rules,if so please get in touch. —BY THE WAY STILL A GREAT GAME!

> the only rules were you had to wear your best > shoes and new pants. This way you were sure > to get your mom extra upset. This is twisted. I love it. If I ever wore anything other than my many-patched dungarees (remember calling them dungarees?), my mother would have cut me off at the knees, making me a shorts-wearer, to solve the problem!

We’re just starting to get into the groove here. There are many absolutely great reactions of people when they come by, look at the games and see the spaldeens. It takes them back to very fond memories. One guy is sending one to his sister in Texas. He’s not going to tell her – just have her get it and be surprised. Liz from Spalding is here with several hundred balls. We’ve been giving them to people if they contribute a few bucks to the Park Slope Baseball League. We’ve started the stickball fun. Anyone who wants to take a whack can come by and do it. Bob Catell, head of KeySpan Energy came by, put on one of our tee-shirts and took a few shots. At first he was a bit rusty, but then he clobbered one. Right in the middle of Bob’s turn a parade starts going by! Several hundred kids in a couple of marching bands. And here we aremoving out of the way as we try to manage the event and record it on the Internet. What a scene! We will post shots of it soon.

This is mostly hearsay, but I do know that this game was played in inner-city Wilmington, Delaware ( I have many friends from there) in the mid-80’s under the name “relievio” and games lasted several days, and encompassed several square miles of territory. Each team had a home base, and “teams” would remain constant throught a summer, with challenges being issued from one team to another and lasting until one team or the other was finally all caught. Players had “positions” to play, and teams typically encompased ages from 6 to 16. I grew up in southern New Hampshire, and we had a similar game called “team tag” (OK, we’re bland and had no creativity). It was like the New York version of “ringaleavio” with a single team being “it” though there was no real hiding, since we played in an open field. Players were freed from, Jail via a single tag, and a whole line of players could form so long as one was actuall topuching “jail.”

Did anyone ever play “War”? Or “Steal the Old Man’s Bundle?” I had two brothers and sisters and we used to play “War” for hours. You dealt out all the cards and then each played a card. The higher card won and the winner took both cards. If the cards were equal, you had to say “I declare War”. Then each dealt out three cards face down and one card face up. Highest card wins all the cards. Object of the game is to get all the cards. – webdiva
