I was a jacks “champion” in sleepover camp many years ago and now my 7 1/2 year old daughter is learning to play. It’s amazing how good I am now that I have a grown-up sized hand!!! I had forgotten that the fancies were called fancies. I only was able to remember squeeze a lemon. Can someone post exactly how to do Jack be Nimble? And, exact steps for any other fancies? Thanks so much!!!!

Wow! I thought I was the only one on a quest to revive jacks. I’ve been looking for them for weeks at the “usual” toy stores — only to find plastic jacks. I can’t believe that finding metal jacks is so difficult! I forgot entirely about “fancies” until I read this discussion. I now remember playing “lick the lollipop” and recall putting the jacks in a circle — but I don’t remember the rest of the rules. Anyone remember them?

I was born in the Bronx in 1947. I lived at 441 E. 139 Steet. I went to PS 9. I remember playing with the spalding balls where you bounce the ball and cross over the ball with one leg as you chant a rhyme. You had to keep the ball bouncing throughout the rhyme. Can anyone tell me what the name of that game was called? Do you remember any of the rhymes? One that I remember is: “One Two Three O’Lary I spied Mistress Mary Sitting on a bumble-ary One Two Three O’Lary” We would cross our leg over the bounced ball each time we said the words that rhymed. Hope someone can add some info. Thanks,
Does anyone remember the…

I’m new to this site. My 6th grade class will learn “jacks” among other historical cames for a history day of games through the ages. Can anyone write down the whole fancy? I remember “Sweep the parlor sweep it clean, so no dust can be seen. Pick up a jack, move it back… but what is the rest of this fancy? This site has awakened some very lost rhymes and rules. Anyone out there can help … my e-mail is attached. I learned to play at Wawokiye

I never knew that there was such a website as this. THIS IS GREAT. As a girl growing up in Washington D.C., if you didn’t know how to jump double dutch, you stayed your behind inside. Now I have a daughter of my own who I homeschool so I’m am trying to teach her double dutch. Hard with just the two of us girls, so I am also now teaching my two sons. (But they are double-handed right now.) At one point I was even able to jump double-handed rope (it’s all about the rythm).
