To Sharon, Your one two three alera sounds something like what we palyed in Belmont, Mass. in the 40’s. Our game was with one ball and called “Ten, nine, eight” You had to bounce the ball against the wall ten times, then nine, then eight and so forth. Each round got harder with “clapsies”, double Clapsies”, then the alera where you threw the ball under your arm, then your leg between bounces. I’ve never met anyone from any other place in the States who’d heard of it. Any of you out there remember it?

Did anyone else sing this clapping song, which some might feel sounds racist, but was really a cross-cultural part of my childhood: Chinaman, had a wife led him such a miserable life. Led him to the top of a hill, led him down like a rolling pill (?) Chickalaka-chee-chi-cho-chikalora etc etc imitating “Chinese language sounds” (at least to little kids) We sang this with our Asian friends, and were fascinated with Chinese culture. Thanks.

Does anybody remember the Betsy McCall paper dolls that were in each issue of McCall’s magazine? My other paper doll sets were Dinah Shore and Annette. My friend had Gisele McKenzie. I also had a real Betsy McCall doll, about 8 inches tall. I had a “model” doll that pre-dated Barbie, was a little smaller and had a less exaggerated figure. She looked a little bit like Marilyn Monroe or Kim Novak. My Baby dolls were Betsy Wetsy and Tiny Tears. I had a ballerina doll with jointed legs.

I was teaching my granddaughter how to play hopscotch and I can’t remember what happens when you reached 9. Since I think that was the last number do you hop over to a non-numbered area on 2 feet, turn around and then pick up your marker, hop over 9 and come back down? The instructions at this site don’t talk about my dilemma. I’ve asked many of my friends and no one seems to remember. Thanks for any input.

This is how we played: playground rules was only to fours, tournement play was to sixies: These are the levels (which have to be done onesies to whatever-sies (4 or 6) to get to the next level: babies, eggs in a basket, pat egg, egg pat, pat egg pat, ups, downs, (first do a babies and then finish with a second ball toss to transfer the jacks in hand to the other hand-ups, or the floor-downs ) double ups, double downs, (different wrist action on second motion) pigs in the pen, pigs over and under the pen, crack the egg, strike the match (sweeps), scrubs (back and forth scrubbing motion) around the moon, —

Growing up in the state of Delaware, I, too, played a lot of Seven-Up. What I remember was first you played the rounds with both hands followed by one hand. Then it was a clap before the catch, next time you rolled your hands around each other then crossed your arms placing hands on shoulders. After that was one bounce, then bounce ground to wall then under the leg and finally the spin. Taking for granted my memory is even close to clear at my age this is how I remember my daily game always played sometime between lunch and supper.
