Ginny dolls, Tiny Tears,…

Ginny dolls, Tiny Tears, Barbies, Chatty Cathy! Paper dolls – YES! The Betsy McCall ones that would show up in McCalls magazine every month. Movie stars – Janet Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds. Girls – modern & old-fashioned. After a while, I drew & made my own – loved coloring in the clothes with colored pencils (before felt-tipped markers appeared on the scene). Made the dolls out of oak tag so they’d last – even made stands for them!

Looked through all the archives, and can’t find this one: Big Name Buttons Big name buttons (really, big round laminated pins – red with your name in white bold letters – very big in the late ’50’s, early ’60’s. Complicated clapping maneuvers which I can’t remember much of. Big name buttons – ah, ah, ya gotta wear ’em Big name buttons – ah, ah, you’re a square, and you really know where If your name is Shirley, you gotta show it If your name is Suzie, well let us know it If you got no button, oh what a shame Cause How the Heck Will Anybody Know Your name (Repeats first two lines)

Facing the stoop a kid yells out Red Light Green Light, 123, while the kids behind him run as far as they can.. May I take a Giant Step? Yes, yes you may… don’t remember the rules of these games. We played statues by one person standing center and spinning the other kids in turn in a circle by their hands till they let go and however they stopped or landed, they had to freeze into position and not move. We played war with a chalk piechart of country names and you bounced the ball in the country you declared war on. What a hoot. Great website….I’ll be sending these games and rhymes to my other fortysomething friends from Queens!

The UK game descended from the Roman invaders Played with 5 cubes only, usually made from plaster although some commercial sets in the 1950s were wood. No rubber ball. Called “CHUCKS” in NE England, other names elsewhere. Could be made with primary school technology – press an existing cube into modelling clay, fill the hole with plaster perloined from a building site. Can be stacked which jacks can not, Nelson’s Column, Lamp posts, cricket all require this. Query? when did the American metal version come to England?

Our Girl Scout Service Unit is having a camping weekend using the 70’s theme. For games, we have decided to use double-dutch jump rope for outdoors with chinese jumprope to be the indoor game if it rains. I’m looking for information on history of both and rhymes to include in the leaders’ packets. Thanks.

Dear all. I’m the administrator of The Norwegian center for dokumentation of Children Culture in Stavanger Norway. I have read with great interest your messages, most of them are registered in my book “Barnet i liv og lek” (The Child in life and play) published by The Universcity Press in Oslo. My archive copy is datet 1983 the 3rd edition. However, I regret to say that it is not in sale anymore. The ISBN number is 82-00-06394. The melody that are used for En, to, tre, O’Leavy (One, two three O*leavy) are One little, two little, three little Indians, four little, five litle, six little Indian, seven little, eitht little, nine little Indians, ten little Indian boys – men. My name is Alice, my husbands name is Arne etc are used in the same way in Norway. The names are of course Norwegian. Hope this can be of interest for someone?
