In Manhattan (on the West Side) in the forties, we called it Chinese school. I have no idea why we called it that but that’s what we called it. I also taught it to my grandchildren and they loved to play it in my house because we had a lot of steps.

Hi. We called this “Stone School” here in Philadelphia. Usually played out front of my house because we had alot of steps and the best shade trees. Great game on a hot day when no one wanted to run around. Boys and girls played this game. Thanks for the memory! Haven’t seen it played since the late 60s!

That sounds like a fun one! I’ve never heard of anything like that one. I need help remembering the layout of one. It was made up of 10 squares – like an enclosed tic-tac-toe board with an extra square on the top right hand side. The squares were numbered 10-20 and so on through 100. I remember that 10 was the center square and 20 was top left, with 100 as the extra square. Can anyone help me with this – i’d like to teach it to my daughter!!
