My friend Susan and I met when we were 2 1/2 years old – we’re both in our mid-40s now. We have never lost touch. In fact, she is godmother to one of my daughters. We haven’t lived in the same State since college, but we always manage to keep in touch. Even did a long weekend together with families several years ago. I’ve always said she’s my oldest friend, and she’s always referred to me as her youngest oldest friend (we’re 7 months apart!).

To MG: Here’s another version of Concentration. Everyone sits in a circle, clapping and snapping in rhythm to: Concentration (clap snap), are you ready (clap snap), if so (clap snap), let’s go (clap snap), starting with (clap snap), names of (clap snap) – Then the leader would pick the subject – colors, names, states, baseball teams, whatever. Whoever got tongue-tied on the clap-snap was out. A little more civilized than “because I like the letter A” (which was, as I recall, sung to the tune of A Sailor Went to Sea-Sea-Sea). Oy vey.

Okay, here’s the clean version of Miss Lucy: Miss Lucy had a baby, she named him Tiny Tim, She put him in the bathtub to see if he could swim. He drank up all the water, he ate up all the soap, He tried to eat the bathtub, but it wouldn’t go down his throat. Miss Lucy called the doctor, Miss Lucy called the nurse; Miss Lucy called the lady with the alligator purse. Etc. etc. etc.

Before skip-its were Skip Sticks – in the early 1960s. You’d hold the stick in your hand, to which was attached the string, to which was attached the ball. Later on they did away with the stick and replaced it with an ankle strap.

Never a collector, I try to throw away all the little things that accumulate in a house with children to this day, but I never can pass up a gum ball machine the bigger the gumball the more compelled to find some coins I feel.

I started taking ballet lessons. I lived in downtown Manhattan and I took my lessons on the upper East side of Manhattan. I got into the number 6 train on Canal Street and got out into a completely different world on 77 th Street. I walked the few blocks to 79th and 3rd and went into my classes and ate pizza on 76th and 3rd with my friend Luisa after class and before descending the stairs.

My mom let me wear anything…

My mom let me wear anything and everything so I can’t share these stories of deprivation. I don’t allow my daughter to wear those shirts which show her stomach, because I feel it doesn’t look right. On Saturday I was in the park watching my son practice soccer and also watching was a little girl of three or four. She and her mother were having a big fight because the little girl wanted to wear her white patent leather platforms in the mud and grass – the little girl won with the best whining.
