I remember playing this…

I remember playing this but its a bit fuzzy. You jumped over and back acrossed the rope (elastic cord or what ever it was called ) The cord holders them moved their feet apart and you jumped over each cord and back, while the cords were apart you jumped over both cords and back. the holders then moved their feet together and you jumped over the 2nd cord while catching the 1st with your toes so that you formed a diamond. You then turned around three times and jumped out with a foot on the outside of each cord.(stradling the cords) It seems we moved the cord from the ankle to midcalf and knees ad repeated the moves. I think there was more moves but can’t remember any more, hope this jogs someones memory.

Reading this brought back amazing memories – my 5 and 6 year old daughters have been learning some jumprope/hand clapping rhymes and I was trying to teach them some I remembered from my youth – this helped me fill in a lot of holes. Some I remember but didn’t see here are: So-So and So-So Sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G First comes Love Then comes marriage Then comes So-So in a baby carriage Sucking his thumb Wetting his pants Doing the hula hula dance! Does anyone remember: Oh I wish I was a little bottle of Coke (repeat) I’d go slurpy, slurpy, slurpy and make everybody burpy Oh I wish I was a little bottle of Coke Oh I wish I was a little bar of soap (repeat) I’d go slidey, slidey, slidey, under everybody’s nightie Oh I wish I was a little bar of soap Oh I wish I was a little piece of glass (repeat) I’d go cut-ty, cut-ty, cut-ty, and make everybody bloody Oh I wish I was a little piece of glass etc. I know there were more verses, the elementary school kids used to sing it on the bus when I was in kindergarten 1970-71.

August 2-2000 Update on my comments of 6-30-99 In the time since my last comments on the subject of jumping or skipping rope & my web site being named jetomatic.com on matters of the jump rope & my product of a water spraying automatic jump rope that requires no hands to spin the rope & is regulated by a means to controll the speed of the rope, I woul”d like to ask your visitors to your site to look at my site that has pictures & explanations of & give me their opinions as to what they think of this unique one of a kind toy. After they have looked at this item I woul”d appreciate hearing from any and all of the public. The sites have several sheets on it, & have good offerings if you look at it & read it well. Thank You Site once again is jetomatic.com the E.mail address is jetomatic [at] jetomatic [dot] com. This is a secured site Ernest Craven.

What a great discussion…

What a great discussion ! And what great memories all this brings back ! I especially enjoyed visiting the link to the kids games that someone posted… Red Rover… Ghost In The Graveyard… Mama May I… Red Light Green Light… ahh, man!! I played all that when I was a kid! I loved Chinese jumprope too and like many others here I’d love the rules from someplace if anyone has them, I’d love to teach my young cousins how to do it. Never did the “double dutch” jumping… not adept enough! It was all I could do to keep going if we were doing a game where we had to do fast jumping! Haha!! These rhymes are all so familiar as well ! Thanks for a great little memory jolt and something pleasant to pas a slow and quiet Sunday afternoon ! Take care!

I spent endless hours jumping double dutch in the 60’s outside of Phila. Germantown area. I recently went back there , found my old girlfriends and pulled them into Daniel St. We coughed and laughed alot and we could remember how to turn and jump but only half remembered the rhymes. I have begun to form a group here in Charlottesville Va. so that my daughter will hopefully have this memory too! It’s ashame that kids just don’t do this anymore. I aim to change that. Remember Lover boy love him so can’t let him go no,no,no! Or Winston tastes good like an eeny meany disalleeny oo aah aah malleeny, hotchy cotchy liberace i love you, take a peach take a plum take a stick of chewing gum don’t like it don’t take it do the Alabama shake it, hotdog baby chicken in the gravy here comes mama with the balled headed baby. wrap it up in tissue paper throw it down the elevator first floor stop chicken baby, second floor stop chicken baby etc..
