I came to this site, hoping to find the first line to a verse — someone typed it here, but the first line is still missing. ?? something-something-something-something ?? I met my boyfriend at the candy store. He bought me ice-cream, he bought me cake, he brought me home with a belly-ache. Mamma, Mamma, I’m so sick. Call the doctor – quick, quick, quick. Doctor, Doctor, will I die? Count to five and you’ll be alive. 1-2-3-4-5. I’m alive. 6-7-8-9-10. I’m dead again. But the missing first line is driving me crazy. Here’s a game we’d play where you would do these things actions to another person (on the back, or head, or whatever) and try to almost hypnotize them. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate on what I’m saying. People are dying, little boys are crying, concentrate. Concentrate on what I’m saying. Crack an egg on your head and let the yolk spill down, let the yolk spill down, let the yolk spill down. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate on what I’m saying. People are dying…. Stick a knife in your back and let the blood run down, let the blood run down, let the blood run down. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate on what I’m saying. People are dying…. There were other versus too — but at the end you would sing: Put a rope around your neck and pull it, pull it. And, if the person was truly concentrating through the whole thing, they would subconsciously lean back when you were pretending to pull the rope. Now that I think about it — it’s a really morbid game.

This site has brought back so many memories!! I was so happy to find others who remember “the spades go tulips together…” a very complicated hand slapping game. My family is from Inwood but we moved across the river to Hudson county NJ when I was small. Here are some Jersey versions of street game songs: Jump rope chant: Cinderella dressed in yella Went downtown to buy some mustard On the way her girdle busted How many people where disgusted 10-20-30-40, etc. (jumping fast as the rope turns) Does anyone else remember this circe game song? I’m a bowlegged chicken on a knock-kneed fence Never been so happy since I don’t know when And I walk with a wiggle and wobble and a twist Doin the Tennessee Wig-walk. Just doin the Tennesee wig-walk. Terri here are some variations on the “I wish I were” song: I wish I were a little bar of soap, bar of soap I wish I were a little bar of soap I’d slippy and I’d sliddy over everybody’s hiney Oh I wish I were a little bar of soap I wish I were a little bumble bee, bumble bee I wish I were a little bumble bee I’d sit up on the steeple and I’d spit on all the people Oh I wish I were a little bumble bee I also remember many stanzas to the Lulu had a baby she named him Tiny Tim song but they are pretty dirty. Also here is a variation on the “we are the girls of” song: We are the Jersey girls We wear are hair in curls We wear our brothers shirts They call us stupid jerks. Oh, ladies, thank you so much for the memories.

Reading this brought back amazing memories – my 5 and 6 year old daughters have been learning some jumprope/hand clapping rhymes and I was trying to teach them some I remembered from my youth – this helped me fill in a lot of holes. Some I remember but didn’t see here are: So-So and So-So Sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G First comes Love Then comes marriage Then comes So-So in a baby carriage Sucking his thumb Wetting his pants Doing the hula hula dance! Does anyone remember: Oh I wish I was a little bottle of Coke (repeat) I’d go slurpy, slurpy, slurpy and make everybody burpy Oh I wish I was a little bottle of Coke Oh I wish I was a little bar of soap (repeat) I’d go slidey, slidey, slidey, under everybody’s nightie Oh I wish I was a little bar of soap Oh I wish I was a little piece of glass (repeat) I’d go cut-ty, cut-ty, cut-ty, and make everybody bloody Oh I wish I was a little piece of glass etc. I know there were more verses, the elementary school kids used to sing it on the bus when I was in kindergarten 1970-71.

Oh site is too cool. Here’s one from my elementary days (PS.70 in the Bronx) Ms. Mary Mack, Mack, Mack All dressed in Black, black, black. With silver buttons, buttons, buttons All down her back, back, back. She asked her mother, mother, mother. For 15 cents, cents, cents. To see the elephants, elephants, elephants. Jump over the fence, fence, fence. He jumped so high, high, high. That he reached the sky, sky, sky and he never came back, back, back ‘Til the 4th of July, lie, lie. And also, Grandma, Grandma sick in bed called the doctor and the doctor said Grandma, Grandma you ain’t sick all you need is a hickory stick hands up, shake it, shake it, shakity shake (*hand directions*) hands down, shake it, shake it, shakity shake to the front to the back to the side, side, side (*jumping directions* to the front to the back to the side, side, side I never went to college, I never went to school but I bet you five dollars I could shake it like a fool.
