Did anyone play with two pink balls bouncing them against a wall? We used to do one, two three alera, four five six alera, etc. and at alera you had to bounce it under your leg or clap or turn around. We also used to do Mathew, Mark, Luke and John, you’re the next so carry on…. and you would pass the balls to the next one. Does this ring any bells with anyone?

I was born in the Bronx in 1947. I lived at 441 E. 139 Steet. I went to PS 9. I remember playing with the spalding balls where you bounce the ball and cross over the ball with one leg as you chant a rhyme. You had to keep the ball bouncing throughout the rhyme. Can anyone tell me what the name of that game was called? Do you remember any of the rhymes? One that I remember is: “One Two Three O’Lary I spied Mistress Mary Sitting on a bumble-ary One Two Three O’Lary” We would cross our leg over the bounced ball each time we said the words that rhymed. Hope someone can add some info. Thanks,

I’m new to this site. My 6th grade class will learn “jacks” among other historical cames for a history day of games through the ages. Can anyone write down the whole fancy? I remember “Sweep the parlor sweep it clean, so no dust can be seen. Pick up a jack, move it back… but what is the rest of this fancy? This site has awakened some very lost rhymes and rules. Anyone out there can help … my e-mail is attached. I learned to play at Wawokiye

I’m not sure of the proper spelling, but the part I remember goes like this: Two people stand facing each other, holding hands (one person has arms crossed so that an “X” is formed) and the song begins ( you also pull left, right, etc making a crisscrossing motion with joined hands): Here we go zoolio, zoolio, zoolio Here we go zoolio all night long. (release hands and start going backwards) Take a step back Sally, Sally, Sally Walk into the alley, alley, alley. I went to the country, and what’d I see? I saw a great big man tryin’ to “hypotize” me. I go way back (put hands on waist & lean back) Got a hump in my back (lean forward w/hands in small of back) Do the crab walk, do the crab walk (players “strut” towards each other, still in humped position, and trade places) The last part is what has me stumped…does anybody remember this at all? I grew up in South Jersey, if that’s any help. Please respond here or email me at:

Here’s a different version on D-I-S-H. I was born in chicago, I’m 40 now, living in Denver. Wish I be apart of the Double Dutch Divas’in New York, they’ve got it going on! We sang,”D-i-s-h, D-i-s-h, “D” is for double dutch, “I” is for irish, “S” is for single, and “H” is for hop. Which ever on you landed on is how you jumped next. If you stopped on “D” or double dutch, you jumped double dutch to whatever rhyme you wanted. “I” or Irish you jumped to whatever rhyme you wanted, but Irish was turned like double dutch, except you turned the rope under handed. “S” was just plain single which you turned with a single rope, and did red hot peas or something. “H” or Hop, you jumped double dutch, and you jumped high on both feet, or we also called them pop ups. Have fun.

To L on the Pink Pajamas song: I wear my Pink Pajamas in the summer when it’s hot. I wear my flannel nightie in the winter when it’s not. And sometimes in the springtime and sometimes in the fall. I jump into my little bed with nothin’ on at all. That’s the time you oughta see me. That’s the time you oughta see me. That’s the time you oughta see me. When I jump into my little bed with nothin’ on at all. Of course, when we sang it, we would change the chorus to: That’s the time you oughta see her. (and point to one of our friends) This brought on the second chorus: Nosey, Nosey what’s it to you. Nosey, Nosey what’s it to you. Nosey, Nosey what’s it to you. If I jump into my little bed with nothin’ on at all?
