In Chicago in the 40’s we played a game called “Russia,” bouncing a tennis ball against a wall. I think #1 was to throw the ball onto the wall and catch it, #2 was to throw the ball and let it drop and then catch it, and #3 was to throw the ball and clap once. Beyond that, I’m not sure. Other tricks were throwing the wall and clapping twice, putting a hand on the wall and throwing the ball over the arm and catching one-handed (both arms?), and slamming the ball onto the ground in front of the wall to let it carom off and then catch it, and throwing the ball under a leg (both) and catching it. Can anyone help?

Hi, I’m a senior Journalism student and I’m doing a folklore paper over jumping rope. Here is a rhyme my father remembered. Last night, night before 24 robbers at my door. I got up and let them in, hit em’ in the head with a rolling pin.

Thanks to all for jogging my fifty-plus year old memory. Does anyone remember a game that was played using a golf ball, bouncing it on the sidewalk, and naming things in specific catagories..like, fruits, states, cars, etc.? I’m trying to find games like these to occupy my 3 young granddaughters.

Can’t add to Gillian Bee’s rhyme, but it did remind me of a rhyme we said in Glasgow in the 60’s : “Not last night, but the night before three wee monkies came to the door one with a fiddle one with a drum and one with a pancake stuck to his bum”

The joys of a by-gone age! I remember playing “balls” in the 60’s in the East End of Glasgow. Our garage doors acted as the wall – all the children from the neighbourhood would come round and we would each take a turn and would be “out” when a ball was dropped. I remember there were 10 positions. 1st position – bounce the ball on the ground and against the door once. 2nd position – lift your right leg up, bounce the ball under that leg and against the door twice. 3rd position – lift and cross your left leg over your right, bounce the ball under that leg and against the door three times. 4th position – both feet approx 2 feet apart, bounce ball under your legs and against the door four times. 5th position – turn slightly to the right, bounce ball behind your back against the door five times. 6th position – bounce ball on ground and against the door, spin around for six times. Can’t remember the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th positions but each stage became harder. Maybe I don’t remember because I never got that far without dropping a ball but I do remember that when you did get to the 10th position you continued in reverse order back to 1st position. If anyone can remember please put me out of my mysery!

In the late 50’s and early 60’s in Yorkville (Manhattan) we used to line up and jump into and out of the rope one at a time then run around the rope turner and jump back in and out on the other side to this rhyme: “Put the dirty diapers on ____” The name of the person would be the kid who was in the rope at that moment. It was a very fast game and so much fun.
