Fellow Skully players, …

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 18, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsApril 18, 1999

Fellow Skully players, I have finally begun work on my “Official Skully Rules” document. I’ve gotten through the introductory rules and a glossary of terms. I’d like to know the voice of the people on releasing it unfinished: a) Wait until you finish b) Let us see it now c) Stop writing the official rules, bad idea anyway Come on, folks, we need more skully chat. Scour your memories, and tell us all how _you_ played the game, like… o how big were the boxes? o what size was the board? o what was the weirdest cap you used? o what was your shooting technique? o what bonuses did you have (pipsies, numbers around the “13” box, etc.) o where did you play (street, indoors, what city, etc.) Yack it up! -HMM

I, too, grew up in East New York in the 50s. And I certainly remember A my name is Alice…. I’m trying to teach it to my daughter but it just doesn’t work with the large beach balls. Where are those pinky balls anyway? Other girl games I remember involved jumping rope. I recall that I was VERY good at double dutch. It was alot of fun. Double dutch involved two girls at the opposite end of two jump ropes – one rope in each hand, each rope sort of crossing over each other. The jumper would have to start in one of the corners and jump really quickly over each rope as it landed and flew up off the ground. This is too difficult to explain but very easy to do. What great memories.

Lizgui… Thank You!!! I couldn’t remember the name of a favorite game I used to play. It was “Concentration!”. Girls names,(as you said), names of flowers, names of boys (of course!) and anything else we could think of. It was so much fun thinking of things to name! Thank you for bringing that back! 😉

How about “Concentration”…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 18, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsMay 9, 2019

How about “Concentration” The hand movements were two pats to each knee [while sitting cross legged on the floor], 2 claps, and then snap your fingers on each hand once. You kept repeating this movement while singing the verse. “Concentration . . . name of . . . GIRLS . . . starting with . . . A” Everyone sat in a circle and it went around the circle, every person doing the next letter in the alphabet. It went on and on until someone messed up, and then you would start all over again The subject [word in Caps above] could be anything you wanted, and you could start with any letter of the alphabet. Great way to kill time on a summer’s day until they opened up the johnny pump!!!

I came from South Brooklyn, and we called it skellzees. In our neighborhood, in the late 60s, we only used bottle caps. Nothing larger was allowed. We weighted them down with melted crayons — in all colors. Some of the houses on our street had slate sidewalks, and they were the best to play on. The bottlecaps would just glide across. Makes me want to play again!!

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 18, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsApril 18, 1999

Like many things within families, bikes were handed down as kids outgrew them. In my family that meant that I, the girl, got my cousin’s and brother’s boy’s bikes. You know, the ones with that middle bar. To this day, at the age of 48, I still swing my leg even though I finally have a girl’s bike! I sure wish that I could put those multicolored streamers at the ends of the handlebars!!

At the age of 48, I am still ashamed at my inability to jump Double Dutch as a kid growing up in Brooklyn!
