Back in my neighborhood…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 10, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

Back in my neighborhood in South Brooklyn, no one had a pool — not even the kiddie pool. The park in our neighboorhood, Carroll park, was divided into 3 sections and covered an entire block. One end section was the kiddie section — with kiddie swings, slides, and seesaws. There was a large rectangular section in the middle that was two steps down and surrounded by a wrought iron fence. At each end was a sprinkler. Everyone who didn’t hit the beaches in the hot weather, hit Carroll Park to play under the sprinklers and splash around. The easiest way to cool off if the johnny pumps weren’t open!!

Kissies – I haven’t heard…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 10, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

Kissies – I haven’t heard that in years. Where was your favorite place to play jacks? Mine was on a painted concrete porch, preferably just swept with a broom. Did you play with ten jacks and pick up the jack while the ball was bouncing? Then, you would transfer the jacks to the other hand and catch the ball with the hand that picked up the jacks (like everything with your right hand)? I’m sure different areas played differently just as we sang different songs to jumprope. I grew up in Baltimore and that’s how we played.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 10, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

Just think of the condition we could all be in if we could double-dutch now. I would love to be able to do it again – at the age of 47. Jumping rope is supposed to be great to lower cholesterol. Maybe I’ll go buy a rope. The kids in the city of Baltimore don’t quite do d/d the same as we did as kids. They jump on one foot at a time, alternating feet back and forth. We jumped from side to side, both feet together. For the lady looking for chinese jumprope – I bet if you went to the library you could find some illustrations. Don’t they have everything in the library? Jumprope, hopscotch and jacks were my favorites. Board games came in second. I guess I was a cheap kid.

Memories from mid-80’s New…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 10, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsJune 10, 1999

Memories from mid-80’s New Hampshire. We had a great playground game that went under two names: Muckle was the polite, “enlightened” name, and the other was much less polite, and will not be repeated here. The game was what all playground games should be: agressive, painful, and somewhat sadistic. The game was played with a football, or in a pinch, any other object (we played with a comb once). One person had the ball, and had to run away from the other kids ( an avereage game had 40 or so players). The other kids tried to tackle the kid with the ball. When tackled, he tossed the ball straight up in the air. What ever kid caught the ball next became “it” and had to run away with the ball. Here’s the catch: Occasionally, we would have some wimps who would refuse to ever catch the ball. Thus, a “catch” was counted as the first player to touch the ball after it was thrown. No fair dropping it to avoid being tackled. If you dropped the ball, an automatic “pig pile” was called, and all forty kids got to jump on you at once (if you held on, perchance only one or two kids would make the tackle). Needless to say, parents and teachers hated this game, but kids loved it. There was nothing cooler than taking down some kid twice your size.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 10, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsMay 9, 2019

This is mostly hearsay, but I do know that this game was played in inner-city Wilmington, Delaware ( I have many friends from there) in the mid-80’s under the name “relievio” and games lasted several days, and encompassed several square miles of territory. Each team had a home base, and “teams” would remain constant throught a summer, with challenges being issued from one team to another and lasting until one team or the other was finally all caught. Players had “positions” to play, and teams typically encompased ages from 6 to 16. I grew up in southern New Hampshire, and we had a similar game called “team tag” (OK, we’re bland and had no creativity). It was like the New York version of “ringaleavio” with a single team being “it” though there was no real hiding, since we played in an open field. Players were freed from, Jail via a single tag, and a whole line of players could form so long as one was actuall topuching “jail.”

The Pensy Pinkie was so smooth, you had to love the feel. It definitely bounced better too. Maybe now that Spaldeens are back, we can get Penn to make their balls again as well.

I think us gals preferred the Pensy Pinkie. The Pinkie’s were easier and lighter on the bounce, the Spaldeen’s a bit harder. Even though the Pinkie’s seemed to lose their air quicker than the spaldeens, there was nothing like playing ball with a Pensy Pinkie!

This is a great page. I would like to use this as an opportunity to let you all know about someone very special. Did anyone play in Tremont Little League? ( In Da Bronx ) I remember my dad started that league because there was none around the area. I have great memories playing with the big “T” on the cap. My dad even painted his cab blue and yellow because of the Little Leagues colors. ( he was a Lomto member with his own cab) Dad passed a few years ago and I would like to thank him for what he did for me and all the kids who played for “TREMONT LITTLE LEAGUE”. Thanks Ralph Gordon, You’re the greatest!! Miss you Kenny

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 8, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsJune 8, 1999

My first kiss was in the back of the schoolyard in Pittsburgh in the sixth grade. There was this kid in my class, Richard…who really liked me, well at least I thought so. And he was always shoving me around. So one day we were at recess and he starting pushing and landed a quick one on my lips. I was soo surprised at this. This was back in 1983.

My memory about kissies…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 8, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsJune 8, 1999

My memory about kissies was that you picked up the kissing jacks, held them in the air a little bit above where they had been sitting, and let go and let them drop. Where they then ended up was where you played them. I guess if you ended up w/another pair of kissies you did it again w/them, but I’m not sure about that.
