In response to EMB, here’s…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 4, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsJuly 4, 2001

In response to EMB, here’s what I remember of the peanut song. Found a peanut, found a peanut, found a peanut last night. Last night I found a peanut, found a peanut last night. Cracked it open, cracked it open, cracked it open last night…. It was rotten…. Ate it anyway…. Had a stomachache…. Called the doctor… Died anyway… Went to heaven…. That’s all the verses I can remember. We used to sing it on the bus, going to camp, along with the bumblebee song. (I found a little baby bumblebee, won’t my mommy be so proud of me…)

I grew up in Jersey City,…

I grew up in Jersey City, NJ. I remember playing a version of hopscotch that we called “kick the can”. Same basic rules, but you threw a flattened can into the numbered boxes. Then, on the way back, you didn’t pick it up. You had to kick the can back to home base while hopping on one foot.

Here’s one I remember as…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 4, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsJuly 4, 2001

Here’s one I remember as a kid, that my kids just learned at school. It’s amazing how these things keep going. This was meant to be said by two people, the first one asked the questions, the second one gave the answers. WHAT’S YOUR NAME? Mary Jane. WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Down the drain. WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? Cucumber. WHAT DO YOU EAT? Pig’s feet. WHAT DO YOU DRINK? Pink ink. WHAT DO YOU WEAR? George Washington’s underwear! I don’t remember who’s underwear we said, but I don’t think it was George Washington. That’s the way my kids say it though.

I didn’t see any mention…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 1, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

I didn’t see any mention by anyone about the enthusiastic stickball games played in Boro Park and Flatbush in the late 40’s and into the 50’s. All I can remember is that I was a great pitcher with at least 4 different pitches –we played in the street or in school yards –I had a slow curve, a fast curve, a sinker and a fast ball. In fact, one of the players I always played with and against was Spencer Ross — a sports announcer in NYC. He had a great fastball –I used to play against him in my driveway — one game i particularly remember is one where he was winning 4 to 1 in the bottom of the 9th — I finally figured out how to hit him –hit single, homerun, single and homerun to win 5-4. As a general rule, during my H.S. days, no noe was able to get a hit off me — not to brag, but I was good. I wish we had league lke they do now.

Playing Skelly in Sheepshead…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 26, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

Playing Skelly in Sheepshead Bay/Marine Park during the 60’s was my favorite game. I guess that’s why I have knee problems today. I now live in East Brunswick, NJ and hope to spread the word of “Skelly” to others. In fact, tonight I’m suppose to teach by 8 year old how to play the game. I’m curently refreshing my mind on how to play the game by checking out this site. It’s been atleast 40 years since I scraped my knees against the concrete. Can’t wait!

To: Anonymous – message of May 14th, 2001 Re Camp LouEmma — YESSSSSS — I’ve been trying to find someone who went there. I was there just around that time (1958). I grew up in the Inwood…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 25, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsMarch 24, 2019

I grew up in the Inwood section of upper Manhattan. One of the things only girls did with spaldeens was to bounce the ball while chanting certain rhymes, turning one leg over the bouncing ball on certain words. One of the rhymes went something like: Oliver Twist, can’t do this, touch his knee, touch his toe, (something something…) and over we go. You turned over on Twist, this and go. You’d touch your knee and toe where indicated. I can’t remember one of the lines. After you did this, you’d start all over, but this time you’d do everything twice: Oliver Twist Twist, etc. You’d go up until you gave up or got bored. Another bouncing game was A My Name Is Alice. You’d go through the alphabet: A my name is Alice, and my husband’s name is Al, and I come from Alabama, and I sell apples. Does anyone remember these games?

Remember making stilts out…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 24, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsJune 24, 2001

Remember making stilts out of big juice-cans and string? You’d hold the loop of string at about hip height and clomp around… very cool. And those great whirring pull-toys made out of nothing but a big button and a piece of string… get it going fast, pulling your hands in and out… anybody remember any other great homemade stuff?
