Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 4, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

I am thrilled to find this site. When I was in the second grade I lived with my grandmother in New York City, on East 87th Street. I went to St. Joseph’s Catholic School just down the street. I was introduced to jumprope during recess at school. One of the rhymes I remember went like this, and I’ll bet everyone who has ever jumped rope knows this one: Down in the meadow Where the green grass grows There sits Paula As sweet as a rose She sang and she sang and she sang so sweet Along came Johnny and kissed her on the cheek! How many times did he kiss her? The rope turners would double-time the turns and everyone would be yelling the count! What fun and what memories. Thanks so much for this wonderful website.

Apple on a stick just makes me sick. Makes my tummy go 246, not because it’s dirty, not because it’s clean, just because I kissed a boy behind the magazine. Hey girls, how bout a fight? Her comes (girls name)with her pants on tight. She can wiggle, she can wobble, she can do the splits. But most of all, she can kiss, kiss, KISS!

FYI/announcement: check out , Fleer’s 2000 Tradition Baseball set. WOW!! Modern technology with old style- alot of topps ’54ish,real checklists & team card like the 50’s /60’s, “league leaders”, multiple player prospect cards, subsets of the playoffs and WS. only 450 cards per set,the cards have that “curve”,inserts too, the master box with 36 packs per is great. I can’t take it, gotta go. Nowadays a set comes out all at once. Remember, “hey, mister, is the 3rd series out yet?”

I am glad bell-bottoms and flare pants have made a come back. They are not as outrageous as the 60’s and 70’s version, but do feel great wearing them again. When I wear them I get great compliments by other women. The only way I can describe wearing bells and flares (I’m in my early 40’s) is that is like watching the sky lighten for a Disney Fourth of July celebration.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 27, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

IN THE EARLY 50’S WE PLAYED STICKBALL AT BORO HALL IN THE BRONX, JUST OFF TREMONT AND THIRD AVES. I WAS CALLED RED… PLAYED WITH BLACKY, EDDIE LITTLE, KING LOUIE, FATS AND SEVERAL MORE WHO’S NAMES I CAN NOT RECALL. WE WERE CALLED THE CBC’S, BOUGHT JACKETS, HAD AN OLD LINCOLN AND TRAVELED AROUND PLAYING ANYONE FOR MONEY WE COULD FIND. WE WERE GOOD, MADE MORE MONEY ON A WEEKEND THAN OUR FATHERS MADE ALL WEEK. PLAYED FROM MORNING TILL NIGHT. WE USE TO CLIMB UP THE FIRE ESCAPES TO GET INTO THE BORO HALL IN ORDER TO GET TO THE ROOF TO RETRIVE OUR BALLS. DAYS OF OLD.. DAYS WE WILL NEVER FORGET…ANYBODY STILL AROUND FROM THOSE DAYS??

I didn’t know “Nimble Jack”…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 26, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

I didn’t know “Nimble Jack” of nursery rhyme fame ever showed up in the game of jacks! Clearly more research is needed on this topic. This seems to be a credible explanation of the origin of “Jack be nimble,” though… http://www.rooneydesign.com/JackBeNimble.html

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 26, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

Dear French person, I remember there was a fancy that you played with Jacks saying the little rhyme. You threw up the ball and said jack be nimble, touched the ground and caught the ball. Then you threw up the ball, said “Jack be Quick,” touched the ground again and caught the ball. Then you threw up the ball, said “Jack jumped over,” and touched the ground on the two sides of the jack like your finger was jumping over and caught the ball, finally, threw up the ball said “the candle stick,” picked up the jack and caught the ball. It was an easy fancy

Dear French person, …

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 26, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

Dear French person, Thanks for writing. The “Jack” in the “Jack be nimble” rhyme refers to a fictional person named Jack. “Jacks” is a game played with little metal things (a “jack”) and a ball. It is described in detail at the top of this discussion. A brief translation dictionary: “One-zees”, “two-zees”, etc., refers to the number of jacks you need to pick up. Non-standard English numbers like this is used in many street games. I don’t know if there’s a French equivalent (“trois-cize”?); it’s probably roughtly equivalent to “premiere, deuxieme, troisieme”, etc. Do they play anything like this in France? Let us know! -Hugh McNally
