Jackie and Annette: We sang: In Spain it’s tulips / two lips together, twilight forever, bring back my love to me What is the mea-ea-ea-ning of all these fla-a-owers? They tell the sto-o-o-ry, the story of lo-ve from me to you My heart goes thumpity-thump-thump, thumpity-thump-thump over the side of you (?) I love you one and only, I love you personally This is the sto-o-o-ry, the story of lo-ve from me to you And when we’re ma-a-a-ried, where shall we li-i-i-ive? In sunny Spa-ai-ai-ain, or gay Par-ee-ee-ee oui oui! And we’ll have children of course, and then we’ll get a divorce And then we’ll marry again, so sorry this is the end (Oui oui, cha-cha-cha, cross-cross-cross, applesauce, match in the gas tank — boom boom!

Skully is known by many names–the similar sounding variations generally vary by neighborhood, though I certainly heard “skelly” as well as “skully” in the Bronx. I think that the sing-song quality of “skelzee/skelzies” is extended from the original “skully/skelly” in much the same way as people shooting for the the 2-box would proclaim they were “going for twosies.” As Snoop Dogg would say, “by any name, skelzizzle is off the hizzle for shizzle, dizzle.”

I played skelly as a youngster growing up in Baltimore. We used to play on a painted box in the street. We used to use plastic tops from gallons of milk. We would fill them w/ hot asphallt from the street. It was hard sometimes looking for fresh oil spots in the street to dig up the asphalt. However, it was a necessity b/c this made the asphalt soft enough to dig up with an icecream stick :-). I spent many mornings underneath parked cars looking for oil leaks! -Moe

How do I find out when the annual stickball games are? I’d like to come down to watch. I’m not from East Harlem but it sounds like a great day w/ a “real family flare.” A simple e-mail advisory would be a great set-up to notify people who sign-up to receive the notifications.

My grandfather (from La Fontaine Avenue, Bronx NY) Vincent ‘Jimmy’ Provenzano played on a baseball team known as the “Kroywens” back in the early 30’s – and later. He also played stickball. He passed away a three years ago and I would love to hear from anyone that played with or knew him. He played a lot of semi-pro baseball, including two games against the Sing-Sing inmates. I also currently play semi-pro ball. Ray T

Oh my gosh! I just found this website and I was looking for this particular game. We used to play it sitting crossed legged in a circle as well clapping and snapping but we would say “Concentration concentration navigation, keeping rythym keeping rythym to the beat, ok, lets play and we would choose a topic….
