I grew up in the Bronx,…

I grew up in the Bronx, and learned to play all sorts of games with a Spaldeen.(I am a 49 year old woman who lived on Hoe Avenue, between Aldus Street and 163rd (Bruckner Blvd. from 1958-1963). Howevever, when it came to box baseball, we always tried to use a cheaper, therefore softer ball. This enabled us to use our knuckles to make an indentation on the ball, and hopefully cause it to curve, or dive away from the “batter”.I also played the three box version, where you pitched it to the box in front of the batter, they had to hit it back to the box in front of you, and if you didn’t catch it on a fly it was a single, double, triple or home run, depending on how many times it bounced. One ball and one friend, or just one ball, by yourself, and hours could be passed so easily! By the way, what we called “roofing” a ball was standing on the sidewalk in front of the building and seeing who could throw it up onto the roof! Five stories was as high as I could throw it onto the roof, but then, there were only five story walkup buildings on my block. We always had a kid stationed on the roof to throw the one and only ball we had among us back to us on the sidewalk.

Just found this site. I grew up in Greenwich Village. Does anyone remember: Hello, hello, hello, Sir. Meet me at the Grocer. No, Sir. Why, Sir. ‘Cause I have a cold, Sir. Where’d you get the cold, Sir. At the North Pole, Sir. What were you doing there, Sir. Catching Polar Bears, Sir. How many did you catch, Sir. One, Sir, Two, Sir, three, Sir, Etc. This was recited while bouncing your Spauldeen and crossing your leg over the ball everytime you said Sir. We would go on into the hundreds!

Hi, Jerry. I grew up not far from Jackson Heights. We played single, double, triple, which sounds a lot like your Stonewall Jackson (probably named after your neighborhood, no?). Anyway, did you really have a batter, or was the “batter” actually the person who hit the ball against the wall?

Leda, I remember Stories! Of course I remember A my name is Alice, but it would sometimes get boring (we never seemed to make it past L or M), so we’d play Stories instead. I loved it because it gave you such scope for making things up–and showing your prowess at double and triple turnovers. I haven’t encountered too many other people who remember this game, so it’s nice to share the memories. (I grew up on Dahill Road, between Kings Highway and Quentin Road, in the Gravesend section…)

I grew up on College Ave (1329 to be exact) The brick wall was great for box ball. I went to PS 88 on Sheridan Ave through 2nd grade, then moved to Queens. Growing up in an apartment building with a big hall and steps was great!

I grew up in Jackson Heights. We played a game in the schoolyard of P.S.69Q. We called it “Stonewall Jackson.” Everyone faced the handball wall. The ball was pitched against the wall and the batter had to hit the wall first. Then depending on how far the ball traveled, the hit was determined. Catching the ball on a fly was out. I mentioned this game to a lot of guys who grew up in NY and no one ever heard of it. Did you?

I grew up in Queens and spent the mid 50’s playing stoopball with my buddies. we played it pretty much the same way, screaming single, double ,triple, home run until someone was able to catch a fly ball, we also had strikeouts which was when you missed the stoop.

It’s great to find a site where our childhood experiences resonate. I grew up on Ave. B (bet. 3rd and 4th,) in a cold flat. (I stopped telling co-workers where I grew up when I heard “We bought drugs there when I was in college” once too often.) Guys with beards sold hot knishes from little metal carts on Ave. B in winter, and shave ice in the summer. Ave. C and D and the surrounding streets were like Orchard Street now – a bazaar with wooden boxes on stands on the sidewalk, full of comic books and baseball cards. The Loew’s movie theater on B between 4 and 5 – or wasit 5 and 6? – with those gorgeous yellow plaster lions rampant, clutching blue shields with a wide red sash. Riding the subway at the 2nd Avenue stop with my big brother, wistfully looking at the pea green candy machines in the station, even though mom said the candy was wormy. (And the grease used by the French Fry Guy at B and 4th was rancid.) She couldn’t come up with a story to prevent me from asking about the dolls for sale at the supermarket at B and Second street, though. Anyone else with any memories of the lower east side are welcome to drop me an email anytime.

i grew up in the Bronx, walton ave. We played stoop ball in the school yard on one of the steps leading to the school which faced the schoolyard fence. single if it was not caught; double if it hit the bottom half of the fence; triple the top half and home run over the fence. if you caught the ball on a grounder, fly or off the fence without bouncing it was an out. so was missing the stoop.

I grew up in Coney Island, Luna Park houses. We had concrete ‘turtles’ in the playgrounds. Our game was called “off the turtle”. Played the same as single, double, triple.
