I grew up in Brooklyn and we called them pinky balls. At one point I remember inserting the ball into (god this will age me here!) tube sock, standing against a brick wall and whacking it against the wall between our legs and under our arms to the tune of “hello, hello, hello sir”. Does anyone have any recollection of this? Also, will the new principal at PS 236 please check the roof…there must be a zillion pinky balls up there…unless Mr. Rahinsky got them first!

I grew up on 181 St. and Creston Avenue, right across the street from PS/JHS 79 (Creston JHS). The Concourse was a block away, which meant the D train was a block away. Jerome Avenue and the #4 was all of 3 blocks away. Fordham Road was in walking distance. And the Paradise was simply heaven. The schoolyard was everyone’s main hangout, regardless of the season. Punchball, stickball (mostly fungo), softball, hoops and two-hand touch all year ’round. When we were just hanging out, we copped some time on the stoop across from the yard. When I was 15 my family moved to Decatur Avenue and Gun Hill Road. My mother worked at Montefiore Hospital, so this was a good move for her. Turned out to be a good one for me, as the guys I met there have become my friends for life. We hung out on the stoop of my friend Errol’s apartment building. It was the perfect place to check out what was going on on the block. Great memories, and two great places to grow up in. Steven Springer 2101 Creston Avenue 3539 Decatur Avenue

If the SBHS web site wasn’t enough, this is the greatest. I grew up in Vanderveer Estates. Choy’s, Mano’s and Lenny’s Pizzerias [some of the first around], Mark’s Toy Corner, Carl and Mike’s candy store, Louie’s candy store near the library on Nostrand. Anyone hear from Teddy Friedman or Jackie Fagan? How about when JFK campaigned on the corner of Nostrand and Foster. I stuck my head in the car to shake Herbert Lehman’s hand and couldn’t believe it — an air conditioned car. Any grads of PS 269: Mr. Farb, Mr. Spiro, Mr. Shapiro, Mrs. Genge, Mrs. Ephraim, whom, I’m ashamed to say, Stewart Meyer and I gave an ulcer to. PS 89: Mr. Ezekiel, Mrs. Branhower. I still speak with Abe Schwarz and his sister Helen. We all lived at 1414 New York Avenue. Let me know.

I can’t tell you what a joy this has been for me. NOONE ever knows what I am talking about when I mention skully – to see Yogi playing was great! I grew up in the Bronx during the 60s. We each have several skully caps – each for different purposes. We named them (I had one I called tony the tiger because it was brown and orange and sort of stripped). We had as much fun making our skully caps as we had playing. I remember the bully in our neighborhood used to love to drop our caps down into the holes of sewer caps. Thanks for the memories!

I didn’t know Steve, but I got the e-mail notification from Streetplay. I got on the list after talking to some of the members who were exhibiting at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. I grew up in Brooklyn and took a walk down memory lane reminiscing about the good times I had playing punchball, skelley, etc. in the early 60’s. One of my strongest memories was hanging out playing my games on the street outside my father’s laundry on Coney Island Avenue. Anytime, a fire engine went by (and plenty went by that street), no matter what we were doing, my playmates and I would jump up and wave vigorously at the firemen. In those days, they stood on the ladder. They would chuckle and wave back. We would wave and wave until they went out of sight. We just admired them so much. My heart goes out to Steve’s family. He must have been a great guy.

Sight is great, will be a wonderful place to go back to my youth. Looking foward to seeing the rules from the various sections of the city posted. Looking forward to finding a lot of the guys I grew up with. See a lot of them at the shore, but many have moved away, and would love to renew old relationships. Still play halfball on a regular basic, even started selling them on to other guys who are to old to climb roofs, or hang in sewers. Feel free to contact me for information Polish of Logan

“Gotta” tell “ya”..this is the very best site, EVER…. After 30 years I ‘found’ my best friends on the Internet…Bobby Stone, Jerry Hertz (introduced me to Dylan and guitar playing) Irene Mossberg (who I grew up with, on Alabama Ave. in Brooklyn, and who I went with, as kids to Coney Island and Prospect Park and Botanic Gardens) and last but not least, IRA MOSCOWITZ who I danced with and made-out with so both of us would know what to do when we started dating others, for real!

Hello to all the Bronxites. I grew up in the Bronx from the 60’s to now. My parents had moved from Mount Vernon to Pelham Parkway to get away from crime and a better life. I hung out on Pelham Parkway North, South, Lydig Avenue, and the Allerton Avenue area. There were alot of great times, memories, and sometimes mischief. What changes over the past 40 years as I am still here. Anyone who wants to drop a line please do so.

No one here has really described the game “statues” and I was wondering if it’s the same game I knew. I grew up in Chicago in the 60’s and the girls in my neighborhood played a game called “statue maker.” I don’t know who taught us it (one of our moms?)or how we learned it, but it was one of our favorites. From what I remember, it went something like this: You needed at least 5 or 6 girls in order to play. One girl played the part of the “statue maker” and the other was the “customer.” The statue maker would spin the other girls around and around by the arm and when she let go, the girl would have to freeze in whatever position she landed in. (We used to have the most hilarity with this … crazy positions that you remain in!) Then the statue maker would walk the customer by each girl, trying to “sell” the merits of each statue. The customer would eventually pick one of the statues by tapping her. This brought her to life and then she would chase the customer around and around. My memory is fuzzy at what happens after this point, but I think the freed statue then becomes the customer and repeats the same. Does this ring a bell with anyone? I’m curious if this is a similar version to what you all played in New York?
