I used to spend my summers at the Flatbush Boys Club. As Marshal said I was put into an Indian tribe each year. I remember being an Apache one year and a Cherokee the next. I believe my first year in the Cowboy groups I was in Cimarron. What I wouldn’t give to play bumper pool, knock hockey and make lanyards again!
I went there for 2 or 3 summers in the mid 60’s. I do remember the Green Coke Bottles, I believe for a dime. I remember taking fencing class there, and playing dodgeball. The younger kids were in Indian tribes, I was in Iriquois and in Comanche, and then my last year I was in a Cowboy Group, Dodge City if I remember,but not sure of that. Fun time.
My older brother and I used to take a bus up Nostrand Avenue every Saturday and go to the Flatbush boys club. This was in the late 50’s, early 60’s. I remember the ping pong, pin bowling, chess in the library, swimming (in the nude). There used to be a little greasy spoon restaurant where you got a hamburger, coke and french fries for $.50. Very good memories.
