Does anyone remember a game called skelly or skully (I’m getting old) where you flick a bottlecap around a numbered field on the pavement or if lucky a pre-fab one in a playground. The object of the game is to go to all 12 numbers before your opponent whilst beinmg able to knock him out of a box. Remember?

Does anyone remember the jump rope rhyme “School” where for each grade you did something different. I remember 4th grade you had to jump in backwards, and I’ve found a couple of places that take you up to third grade. But I can’t find the rest of the grade requirements.

Does anyone remember the rhyme that begins easy ivy over? I think it says something like Here comes the teacher with the big fat stick, I wonder what she has for arithmetic…but that’s all I remember. Can anyone help me out? I am from NYC now living in Brownsville, Texas where the girls don’t even jump rope by themselves. I am attempting to show them how. I start on Friday. Any suggestions?

Does anyone remember the flames game? It was this paper game where the girl would write down her full name, and the full name of the guy she liked. Then she would cross out all the letters that matched up in both names. Then she would count up the letters and get a number. With that number she will start counting through the word flames. Like for example, if the number was 7, she would start counting at f. f is 1, l is 2 and so on. So the 1st letter to be crossed out would be F. And you would continue on until you had 1 letter left. Then that letter was supposed to be the fate of the girl and the guy. Now, if anyone remembers this game, what does the letters A and S stand for? I know F was friends, L was love, M was marriage, E was enemies, but I can’t remember the other two. Does anyone remember what they mean?

Does anyone remember this game: You drew a large snail-like spiral and made squares in it then played it similar to hopscotch. You somehow acquired boxes that your opponents had to jump over? I can’t for the life of me remember the details! Help!

I grew up in the Inwood…

I grew up in the Inwood section of upper Manhattan. One of the things only girls did with spaldeens was to bounce the ball while chanting certain rhymes, turning one leg over the bouncing ball on certain words. One of the rhymes went something like: Oliver Twist, can’t do this, touch his knee, touch his toe, (something something…) and over we go. You turned over on Twist, this and go. You’d touch your knee and toe where indicated. I can’t remember one of the lines. After you did this, you’d start all over, but this time you’d do everything twice: Oliver Twist Twist, etc. You’d go up until you gave up or got bored. Another bouncing game was A My Name Is Alice. You’d go through the alphabet: A my name is Alice, and my husband’s name is Al, and I come from Alabama, and I sell apples. Does anyone remember these games?
