For someone growing up in Canarsie in the 60’s, stickball was played in schoolyards (and still is where I live in the Bronx) It allowed two-4 or more kids to play ball. PS 144 and 155 had walls and protected windows. On the wall was a large box, the strike zone. All that was need was a “stickball” bat, sold in a store. Although a broom handle was similar, the store ones were shorter and heavier, much nicer feel. Tennis balls I liked, a bit heavier, more predictable path. I learned to hit up the middle, much safer and less chasing than pulling. Also, I am not a power hitter, it made me much better.

My brothers John and Tim and I always played stickball in our native Canarsie, the center of Brooklyn and the world, to us. Charlie Stella always bragged about his ability to consistently whack a two sewer hit and was usually willing to back up the brag with a bet in which the loser had to spring for a slice of pizza and an Italian Ices at Joe’s Pizzeria. Now and then errant balls would hit cars and windows which would lead to the local beat cop ambling along. He’d collect our sticks and break them in half in the very sewer in which Charlie’s best shots would bounce off of. We would then resort to stoop ball, until we got our hands on more broomsticks and black tape. There wasn’t a house on our block that contained a broom that was more than two feet long!

I got my first kiss in the basement of a synagogue in Canarsie during the bar mitzvah reception of my older brother’s friend, Larry Wolfman. I had just come out of the ladies room when one of Larry’s friends grabbed me and pulled me into a phone booth. And then he did it…he shoved his face into mine. I was a very round chubby nine year-old. He was a much more mature and experienced thirteen year-old. He walked away with a big smile. I ran away with a bloody lip. It was totally yucky!!

P.S.114 in Canarsie was the place to go for a game of stickball, handball, football, basketball, skulley, Johnny on the Pony, Marbles, Knock Hockey, Punchball, Pitching nickels against the wall or the line, ringalevio, war, slapball and softball just to name a few. There was even some weird guy from Czeckloslavokia who used to hit a soccer[?] ball off his head, {what a strange boring game} but we could never get the ball from him. Glory Days! Mousey

Ruby the Knishman was more popular than any president, in Brooklyn in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. I knew him in Canarsie as a youth. He was all over the place! For an in-depth dedication to this fine man, please go to http://www.angelfire.com/co/cascole/ruby.html
