Two teams with broomsticks. Puck — dainey — 6-10 inches, pointed at either end. Play begins by hitting the puck in the air. Boys hit the puck — Play is down the street(s). dON’T KNOW THE SCORing. Loosing side runs back down the street)s) while winners throw their stick at them. Played in Louisville in the west end in the thirties

From Goldy (my street name) Back in the forties in Brownsville in Brooklyn, we made our own scooter. We would get a crate from the fruit and vegetable store, a 2×4 was nailed to it and half a skate, one in front and one in the back nailed to the 2×4. If we could, we would make handlebars from 2 pieces of wood nailed in a “v” shape on top of the crate. We would then decorate the front of the crate with bottle caps. We could run errands for grandma by putting packages inside the crate. That was all we could afford for transportation.

You’re talking about the Schwinn “Krate” series. There was an Orange Krate, Apple Krate (Red), and maybe some others. I remember Captain Kangaroo hawking them on his show when I was a kid. They’re highly sought after by collectors today; I’ve heard of some examples selling in the thousands! Me, I had the Ross Apollo 5-speed. It also had a stick shift and banana seat; not as fancy as the Schwinns, but a cool ride. I wish I had it today, although I’d look pretty silly riding it!

I remember in the mid 60’s a line of boys stingray bikes came out with a small wheel in the front, banna seat, sissybar and stick shift. I never had one but they were really cool and came in a variety of colors. The green color bike was named the “Pee Picker”. The yellow color bike was named the “Lemon Peeler”. Does anyone remember what the names of the other color bikes were?

What’s up? My name is Kenya. I’m looking for instructions to a street-game we used to play called “SKELLEY”. I would appreciate it if someone would hook me up at this e-mail address. I used to live in the Rutland Plaza, on Rutland Rd., and I think it was East 95th St. I wasn’t that good but my friends Taurus, Telley, and Brian were. I’m trying to show my friends here in New Kensington, PA how to play. I know the basics; such as, shooting your top from box one to two, and so on, I need to know the actual rules, such as how does one get out of the middle once he is knocked in? ANYWAY THANKS………:)

Hey, I’m 43, and I taught my kids how to throw and spin a top. I told them all about crack top. We used to decorate the tops of the top which made pretty designs when it spun. You couldn’t get too carried away with designing, because they were quite disposable. You guys put nails in your tops!? Hell! No wonder you were killing my tops! Well that makes me feel prouder that I cracked my share without any modifications. Na na na na na.
