We called it mother may I? But to me this is real little kid stuff and the real hanging out came later on when you sat there or stood there thinking you looked oh so cool. Maybe some running around, like tag. Or maybe taking each other to the really dark parts of the block, and having someone already there to spook the person you brought there. Different kinds of dares to each other. I bet you won’t go down there and bring back whatever to prove that you actually did it. I never smoked, but that was part of what a lot of my friends did in those truely hanging – hanging out evenings. Oh you had your spot and you just knew if you passed by whatever spot after a certain time your buddies would be there.

I remember sitting on the stoop on a hot summer’s night, before A/C, waiting for a breeze to come by.

Silly Putty and the Sunday papers … A plastic egg with a rubbery substance inside. When you flattened the “putty” onto a newspaper page, it carbon copied whatever was on the page onto itself. The joke pages were great fun with Silly Putty. Once you had your face or image on the putty, you Stre-e-e-t-c-h-e-d the putty. I stretched Nancy & Sluggo, Superman, and a few presidents. Hmmmm…. Wonder what Clinton would look like … ; )

To Tom … You brought back more memories.. You are right about the two sides of the key. I wore my key on a green shoelace, and I was forever losing or misplacing the key too …Thanks! 😉

to butirfli one end of the key served to make the skate longer or shorter when you flipped it over and adjusted the nut.If I remember correctly most of the girls on my street used to use an old shoelace as a necklace to wear the key. There was also a felt material on the underside of the clamps,I think it was either red or green.I haven’t thought about those skates in many years until I read your posting.

Does anyone remember metal roller skates? Lobster claw-like clamps held the toe of your shoe or sneaker, and those clamps had to be tightened with a large metal key. Us girls wore the key around our neck. A friend and I used to roller skate around our neighborhood and local parks. The friend had an older brother, who took pleasure in taunting us and trying to trip us, by sticking his out his foot, just as we were gliding by. ;(

I never even tried a Hula Hoop until last summer – that’s right – summer 1998. Which of course I couldn’t do – but my kids had gotten a hula hoop as a gift and periodically – I mean each day periodically I would try to do it and finally I was able to do it to some degree. My friend, with a great body, had this idea that she should go to the beach and use a hula hoop and try to sell them as a great exercise method. She never did it, but my stomach muscles did hurt after I finished with my daily attempts. Before my family moved to Manhattan, we lived in an apartment building in Brooklyn, and after we had to come inside my brother would continue to use that pogo stick no matter how much our downstairs neighbors would bang.
