Growing up in Staten Island,…
Growing up in Staten Island, NY during the early 70’s was a blast. It seemed that EVERY Ice Cream man and the like came around. I guess they felt safe in that strange little place. They must have sat down together and devised a schedule. It was a different truck about every half hour from Noon until around dusk. That is when the mosquitos became just to bad. Mister Softee, Freezer Fresh, The Whip ride, Ralph the italian ice guy, Kustard King, the knife shaprening guy, Good Humor (NO RIDERS), K & N treats (He had sno-cones with a gum ball in the bottom), Spiderman ride(V shaped. The very top was the best place to ride), and Mister Softee again. “Hey Ma, can I have a quarter” ?

Hey, I’m 43, and I taught my kids how to throw and spin a top. I told them all about crack top. We used to decorate the tops of the top which made pretty designs when it spun. You couldn’t get too carried away with designing, because they were quite disposable. You guys put nails in your tops!? Hell! No wonder you were killing my tops! Well that makes me feel prouder that I cracked my share without any modifications. Na na na na na.

Hi, Until I was…
Hi, Until I was 7, my family lived at 3211 Park Avenue, on the corner of E. 161st. I started school at Sacred Heart in Highbridge (actually I went to the annex of Sacred Heart, St. Eugene’s) because I was too young to go to St. Angela Merici (our parish). In 1961 we moved to Pelham Bay where I lived in the “Co-op” on Hutchinson River Parkway. High School: St. Catharine Academy, Class of 71 and Lehman College, class of 75. The Bronx was a great place to grow up. We played Punchball (I was VERY good for a GIRL!) and Ring-a-levio. My brothers played stickball all the time around the corner on 163rd Street. Does anyone remember the rides that came around in the summer? My favorite was the Half Moon which rocked back and forth, higher and higher. I distinctly remember being on that ride and hearing the song “Shimmy Shimmy Coco Bop” Strange!!! When I moved to Pelham Bay, my friends and I hung out on “the corner” (Buhre and Pilgrim Avenue) outside of Joe’s Candy Store. Basically, we did nothing but hang around and drink egg creams (with a pretzel!) My friends from the corner are still my best friends although we’re scattered all over the country now. It’s fun looking back.

Hey! Anyone else used to…
Hey! Anyone else used to have those ugly rollerskates, usually with racing stripes, with HUGE orange wheels? I had blue ones with ORANGE stripes! I think they were hand-me-downs from my sister (I had them in the mid 80s-early 90s, until I finally got Rollerblades). I learned to rollerskate when I was about 6 or 7. They were big and heavy, and pretty clumsy, but a lot of fun to use. Mine got pretty worn out, I remember once, I was skating with a friend and suddenly, the axel and front wheels fell off my skate!! I got rollerblades pretty soon after that… The first time I went to the hospital (er) was because of those skates… I was rollerskating, and the ground got suddenly bumpy/gravelly, and I fell down and hurt my arm. It hurt a LOT and I couldn’t move it. I sat there yelling HELP for about 3 minutes until finally someone stopped… My parents drove me to the er. The whole time I was holding my arm strait, I couldn’t bend it at all. They x-rayed it, then a doctor came in, said it was just a bad sprain and forced my arm to bend! That HURRRRT. I guess it was so he could put a sling over it, but sheesh! The worst part, though, was when I went to school and these mean girls kept saying that I was lying and my arm wasn’t really hurt. Too bad it was my non-writing arm, though, so I could still do my school work, hehe… (Isn’t it always the wrong one? 🙂
That’s funny… Everyone…
That’s funny… Everyone I know calls them Underdogs, not underducks. Maybe it’s different in different places (I’m from Chicago) You push the person in the swing, then say One! (push), Two! (push), Three! (push)… Underdog! And you push hard and run under the swing. The 2 kids I babysit for are constantly asking for them. I usually say no, especially with the older one (longer legs), cause I don’t wanna get kicked in the back! It is fun to give, though!
