At 80 I look back happily at my girlhood in the North Bx.(E.223St and Paulding Ave.) Is the Ann Hutchinson Elementary School still in existence.? PS 78? What has become of the little girls with whom I stoop-sat hour after hour? And what about the boys ? All solid, mature , grandfathers, having survived World War 2.I’d much rather think about the endless hours of ringolevia and watching them steal icechips from the iceman’s truck when he left to deliver blocks of ice to his customers, Annette

In the North Bx.,E223St and Paulding Ave in the early thirties, we sat on the stoop of our two-family houses and sewed clothing for the little five-cent celluloid dolls, bought at Berkies candy store. We also made things out of peach pits by scraping them against the rough cement of the stoop .Remember, anyone? I grew up in Queens (Sunnyside, then Jackson Heights). It was always a “sliding pond.” When there was a parkie at the school playground (PS 149)we would get a Nok-Hockey set. I bought one for my oldest son some years back and we still have it in the basement and play it occasionally. The pucks are now plastic instead of wood. No splinters.

I remember these huge acorn trees that circled my old elementry school, (p.s. 105, Bronx), my sister and I would collect all the acorns on the floor, we had bags and bags full. Than we would go to war with the boys who lived on our block. That’ll teach them not to put hair removal cream on the eggs that they would throw at us on Halloween. Anybody ever play asses up? Well, if you dropped the ball, you better run to the wall because if someone threw it faster than you could run you get a letter, and if you got all 3 letters, everyone got a chance to throw the ball at your ass. OOUUCCHH!!!!

I do remember jellies plastic sandals. They were great and a few of us would swap at school so we could get to wear different colors. When are they coming back? Boys used to wear them too, but don’t seem to now.
