Behind Wilson High School in WAshington, DC there used to be a huge field where the neighborhood boys would gather for a game of baseball in the Summers. Mom must have asked my two big brothers to keep an eye on their little sister, because I remember them consenting to “let me play..” by backing up the kid who backed up the catcher. If the baseball made it by all of us, it was sure to roll across Nebraska Ave, into the SEWER! The reovery procedure required the use of a belt from one of the guys. It was guided into the sewey cover holes, and the cover was carefully raised. Then it was my turn to “play.” Guess who got to be hung upside down into the hole..to pluck the baseball out of the muck. Uck! I can still remember that odor. At least they made me feel like a hero, and I soon found that picking the butterflys off of my mother’s prize zinnias with another “little sister” was much more to my liking.

We used to hang out on the stoop of an apartment building on 73rd st and 13th ave in Dyker Heights Brooklyn and when we made too much noise, one of the tenants 4 floors up used to throw a pot of water out the window to chase us away….

My first kiss was NOT particularly pleasant but it was memorable. I think I was about thirteen or fourteen years old. This guy from the neighborhood who was about my age was always making racy comments around me, which I pretty much ignored. Late one summer night, I was walking home after hanging out with my friends and ran into the guy. He walked up to me, asked me if I’d ever been kissed and before I could reply, planted his lips on mine and stuck his yucky, sloppy tongue halfway down my throat. And then he walked away. At the time I thought, “if this is what kissing is about, I’m NEVER getting married!” We never mentioned it after that and I haven’t seen him in yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeears…… – webdiva

We didn’t call the game Mother May I, we called it Giant Steps. We had a great group of kids living in our development (about a dozen four story buildings encircling a courtyard, which was our world). No one really got picked on; we all kind of just goofed around with each other good naturedly. We took turns being the king of the hill, and we took turns being the one being goofed on. Sometimes we’d get eight giant steps, sometimes we’d get one baby step. It was lots of fun. There was also a fenced-in lawn in the center of the courtyard. We’d run races around the lawn, starting at the same point, each runner going in opposite direction around the circumference of the lawn (which seemed enormous at the time). Who ever got back to “home base” first won. The stoop was reserved for more reserved games like house, horses and Barbies. We had a deluxe stoop; it was almost like a cement deck. There was plenty of room to congregate and go into our little fantasy worlds up there. Once in a while we would get showered with pennies by some kind stranger who would throw them down to us in the middle of our play. We never found out who that was. We thought it was magic.

It all depends on what you…

It all depends on what you are exposed to, what is done and if you can derive satisfaction. It is very hard to be satisfied playing an outdoor game, like ball if you are not good at it. It is hard to become good at something which is difficult to practice. Unlike in the past our lives with our children are spent with many more restraints. We don’t generally let our children hang out outside on the street to play with one another. Also, in many neighborhoods there are not so many children just hanging out there to be played with. Most of our children’s activities are scheduled events. Then maybe some impromptu playing occurs on the sidelines, but most things are organized. With video games there is the safety factor which appeals to parents. Our children don’t have lots of video games, and we actually let our kids hang out on the street in front of our house, ride their bikes around the block without constant supervision, but it is unusual. If kids are outside essentially unattended, then they are usually in backyards in the neighborhoods of myself and my peers. I think fun comes in many forms and although we may feel our kids don’t have enough opportunity to just play and create their own games. I watch my own children and they make time to do all sorts of playing and creation even though they have these ridiculous schedules. The other day at baseball an eight year old said to me she wished it were Friday and that the next day would be Saturday and that she would be able to just sleep and eat breakfast lunch and dinner in bed. I felt for the kid. I often feel the same way. Although there were things I was not happy about at eight, I don’t think having to wake up early seven days a week was one of those things. She chose to be in her activities, but even so not sleeping enough is certainly a drag.

we use to have some steel bars on the corner of w. 174th street and nelson avenue. we use to sit on the bars at night. About 10 feet from the bars was a rather large triangle shaped intersection where during the day on weekends and in the summer we played “off the curb.” Bring back any memories for anyone? My first kiss took place while hanging out in a parking lot with friends. We must have been in 7th grade, and I had a crush on the boy (since he had kissed me on the cheek in kindergarten). We were playing “truth or dare”…and that’s how it happened! (Nothing else ever happened between us after “the kiss”.)

I loved hanging out in the playground by my building in the Bronx. When I got older (like 16 or 17) my friends and I would hang out on the back benches (so my parents couldn’t see from the windows), and drink beer that we bought at the local bodega!
