The Spaldeens would break more easily, but they were real. The Pennsy Pinkies? They bounced great, but we couldn’t afford them–Phil’s Candy Store on 36th St & Clara sold plain ol’ “pinkies” that were pink, yellow, or blue! They were 15 cents when the Spaldeen was 25 cents. But the pinkies were awful. Where can I buy a Spaldeen? I swear, I have taught 5 kids in Vermont to play stickball (we pitch in against my brick chimney), and they love it! With a tennis ball, no less! Help–we need a real Spaldeen!!!!

We also had “Lenny’s” ice cream truck. This was in Queens – anybody else remember?

I grew up in Astoria and remember all of this stuff! whew! One more comes to mind ~ there was also the Junk Man who came around in a horse-drawn something or other! “Junk man here!”

Re Turkish Taffy– The bag of small assorted Turkish Taffy that we used to buy at the movies, had an additional flavor called molasses mint. We used to have a heck of a time trying to discern them in the darkened movie theatre so that we could throw them away–they had stripes on them, which helped….

Hmmm… You know what? I think I said “Mr. Frostee” when I MEANT “Mr. Softee”. And, no, I didn’t know about the green bottles… I only remember blue. And YES, I remember the “chocolate cake Good Humors”! Wow..that takes me back.. I had a DOVE bar the other day and I remember thinking, “This is pretty darn good, but there’s just too much of it!” 🙂 🙂 And I remember the shaved ice and cherry syrup — I LOVED that as a kid. I also remember guys pushing carts full of “homemade” ices that my mother would never let me buy. She said they made the ices in their bathtubs at home! 🙂 🙂 – webdiva

My brothers John and Tim and I always played stickball in our native Canarsie, the center of Brooklyn and the world, to us. Charlie Stella always bragged about his ability to consistently whack a two sewer hit and was usually willing to back up the brag with a bet in which the loser had to spring for a slice of pizza and an Italian Ices at Joe’s Pizzeria. Now and then errant balls would hit cars and windows which would lead to the local beat cop ambling along. He’d collect our sticks and break them in half in the very sewer in which Charlie’s best shots would bounce off of. We would then resort to stoop ball, until we got our hands on more broomsticks and black tape. There wasn’t a house on our block that contained a broom that was more than two feet long!

What about Turkish Taffy. I think it came in 4 flavors, chocolate, vanilla, bannana and strawberry. If it was warm, they’d stretch out and be really chewy. Or you’d put them in your freezer and then whack em on the street

My number was Virginia 9. We lived in queens. I remember shoe laces – Long thin strips of licorish, wax soda bottles, and candy smokes. We used to buy penny candy, little carmels, red hots, and other chewy things that practicly ripped your teeth out of your head. Had to do it on the sly – candy was off limits in our house. medeska

Well I hungout in Harveys Candy Store on St.Johns Place and Nostrand Avenue..all the guys did..just a tiny hold in the wall but we had credit! Owner Tom Harvey kept our debts on index cards and let us know when we failed to play..pinball machine..it was a wonder we could all crowd in on rainy days..all ended with WWII..love thinking about it though. John
