0n April 29th and April 30th 2000 we had our 5th annual Florida oldtimers stickball tournament. It was held at Stickball Boulevard in North Miami. We had many members of the Stickball Hall of Fame playing such as George “Cherokee” Aviles, Henry “Papi” Caban, Ralph Naranjo, Warren “Wally” Rivera, Junior Rosario, Little Cherokee Ruiz, and Eduardio “Wally” Torres. We had enough ball players t o field 4 teams. Our oldest player was 78 years old by the name of Chickie Santiago. We had a great weekend.

My name is Charles Petersil. I grew up in the Bronx, in an area called Highbridge. I was called Husky as a kid. I played stickball on a regular basis on Nelson Avenue, and I used to hit three sewers. I also belonged to a group known as the Satanic Dukes. If anybody remembers me, send an e-mail to me at .

We used to play stickball all the time at ps85 schoolyard on Webster Ave. and 187 st.in the Bronx Most of the time we did’nt use any gloves but we made some pretty spectactular catches with our bare hands. There was one occasion I will never forget, this one day we were playing in the street at 182 st.We were getting a game together and we kept asking this guy (Ithink his name was Red) if he wanted to play. He said no thanks because he usually would end up breaking the ball. Well we all thought he was bragging and we finnally got him to play. When it was his turn to bat,he tossed the ball in the air and swung at the ball so hard and you guessed it he broke the ball in half. My mouth dropped in awe,Ihave never seen anything like that happen before or sinse.

I commend you on a fascinating web site. I recommend that you bring the discussions (or best of) to the fore. The many wonderful stories and memories are buried beneath your opening pages. You might want to think of a little more cross-referencing. Keywords in a reminiscence can ‘remind’ you to check out another category by clicking on the keyword (stickball, choosing-up, schoolyards, etc.) Thanks for all the work you’ve done and best of luck. -TJ

Hi, Until I was…

Hi, Until I was 7, my family lived at 3211 Park Avenue, on the corner of E. 161st. I started school at Sacred Heart in Highbridge (actually I went to the annex of Sacred Heart, St. Eugene’s) because I was too young to go to St. Angela Merici (our parish). In 1961 we moved to Pelham Bay where I lived in the “Co-op” on Hutchinson River Parkway. High School: St. Catharine Academy, Class of 71 and Lehman College, class of 75. The Bronx was a great place to grow up. We played Punchball (I was VERY good for a GIRL!) and Ring-a-levio. My brothers played stickball all the time around the corner on 163rd Street. Does anyone remember the rides that came around in the summer? My favorite was the Half Moon which rocked back and forth, higher and higher. I distinctly remember being on that ride and hearing the song “Shimmy Shimmy Coco Bop” Strange!!! When I moved to Pelham Bay, my friends and I hung out on “the corner” (Buhre and Pilgrim Avenue) outside of Joe’s Candy Store. Basically, we did nothing but hang around and drink egg creams (with a pretzel!) My friends from the corner are still my best friends although we’re scattered all over the country now. It’s fun looking back.

I grew up in the Highbridge…

I grew up in the Highbridge area of the Bronx. I lived at 1050 Anderson Ave and 901 Woodycrest Ave. What great times and great memories. Playing stickball in PS73 school yard, hanging out down by the Harlem river and running around in the abandoned subway “The Shuttle” than ran under our neighborhood. Nothing in my life has topped those times and if there was a time machine I’d be there now. Rob Auerbach
