I grew up in Queens and spent the mid 50’s playing stoopball with my buddies. we played it pretty much the same way, screaming single, double ,triple, home run until someone was able to catch a fly ball, we also had strikeouts which was when you missed the stoop.

Does anyone remember slapball?…

Does anyone remember slapball? In the 50s in Brooklyn (Flatbush) we played this thrilling and skillful game. Three players to a team: three based 1st, 3rd and home. The pitcher stood in the middle of the gutter (we all lived on dead-end streets – a must for this game!!) and fluked (spun the ball in one of four directions, as in boxball) over a chalked in home plate. Balls and strikes were called. The batter would slap the ball hard and made sure to a) stay within the foul lines (two cars) and keep the ball from bouncing on the sidewalk first (an out). 9 innings – lots of fun.

A few Sundays ago, the Foxboro Stickball home run record was broken. 43 HR were hit in ONE GAME by Kyle Winter. The old record, also held by Winter, was 40 HR in a game, set back in July. Kyle hit a “tree shot” which is ranked as one of the longest homers in our history. He padded that with a “second roof” shot, which has only been acomplished a handful of times. The long, enjoyable season ends on November 10th and opening day for the year 2000 has not been scheduled. i grew up in the Bronx, walton ave. We played stoop ball in the school yard on one of the steps leading to the school which faced the schoolyard fence. single if it was not caught; double if it hit the bottom half of the fence; triple the top half and home run over the fence. if you caught the ball on a grounder, fly or off the fence without bouncing it was an out. so was missing the stoop.

I grew up in Coney Island, Luna Park houses. We had concrete ‘turtles’ in the playgrounds. Our game was called “off the turtle”. Played the same as single, double, triple.

Looking for Manufacturer/Supplier of Pimple-Balls? Trying to teach or play Stick Ball, Box Ball, Wire Ball, Ball Tag, Chink, and King is difficult to do without the proper equipment “Pimple Balls”.

On Lower East Side of Manhattan we called it Single, Double Triple. If it went over parked car on opposite side of street on fly it was home run. We used Spaldeens exclusively – they were 26 cents and the color of bubble gum.

Pete, Ron Heller mentions Chinese handball in a post of his in the ‘Running Around’ section. We used to play it in Queens, too, of course. Like regular handball, except the ball had to bounce once instead of everything being on the fly. As kids, we probably played more Chinese than regular handball, which was more for the older guys. We’d start to get more into regular handball as we reached HS age.

In the mid to late 1940’s a Spaldeen cost $.19 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I don’t remember Pensie Pinkies – did they come along in the 50’s? Three sewers was a home run. In the 30’s the “big guys” used to play great stick ball games but that stopped when they went to WWII and rubber balls were not avaialable. While most of the guys came back, they went on to other pursuits after the war. Our games were fun, but they never seemed, in my mind, to match-up with those the “big guys” played.
