In York PA this coming Saturday Sept.22-01 we are having a fundraiser/stickball event. We are having other games too, such as boxball, jacks, jumprope, yo-yos, and of course Marbles. Spalding hopefully is donating the pink balls-either way they are the best, so come out and join us for a great time-food-knishes while they last, root beer floats, old fashioned candy-hoola hoop etc. This event is held at an old shopping center Called Ames on East Market street across from another shopping center, which has Lowes and Giants in it. Thank you Nancy Costa

if anyone out there played the way we did in the projects you would know the pensie pinky was the rich mans ball. I would save for that ball and wait for the sunday morning game to break out that baby. The first three or four batters would have the opportunity to knock that baby senseless. There was nothing like the feeling of a long fly ball coming off your bat from a fresh pensie pinky. Loved that ball.

If anyone knows the specific rules to Russian or Seven Up, as I guess others call it, could you please e-mail me? My aunt taught me that game when I was a child and we spent many hours playing it, but I can’t remember all the rules or the order. Playing Russian with Aunt Margie is one of my happiest childhood memories. I’d love to teach my kids…

Simply put, I preferred spaldeens for stickball and pensie pinkies for punch ball. Are pensie pinkies being made anymore, as spaldeens are.? Let me know.

Orange County, Calif., mid-70s….

Orange County, Calif., mid-70s. Played a game we called Butts Up, with the same consequences for the loser as the Asses Up described on this site. The rules: anywhere from 3 to 20 guys would stand 10 to 15 feet from a garage door or school wall. Someone would throw a tennis ball against the wall and anyone could pick it up, but you were only allowed to use one hand. If you dropped the ball or if the ball hit any part of your body and then hit the ground, you had to run and touch the garage/wall before someone else picked up the ball and winged it at you. If you made it to the wall without getting hit, you were safe. If you got hit, you had one point against you. Three points, and you were Butts Up. Loser would kneel down, facing wall with butt sticking up. Rest of players would line up and fire the ball at your rear. Worst part was if you were playing at recess during school — five guys may be playing, but as soon as someone was Butts Up, 30 guys lined up for target practice. In addition to the big three sports, we also played a lot of Over the Line (tons of variations) and basketball games like Around the World, HORSE and Poison.

I used to play stickball with both spaldeens and pensie pinkies. I preferred the pinkie as it seemed I could do more with it. when I was 15 I used to be able to throw a curve ball that would make the batter duck out of the way, just as the ball broke over the middle of the box. I was a stickball king. a God of sorts. I still play at age 52 and can beat most kids. Those were golden times and the pensie pinkie was part of it. I could also hit that ball into orbit. Like Mickey Mantle, my hits were high and far. Many times the balls were lost, presumed to be in orbit over the earth. So if you ever hear of a UFO and it is described as pink and round, please let me know.

In the Bronx in the the late 60’s and 70’s we played a game called off the curb. We had two players on each team you throw the ball down on the curb a ground ball caught by the infielder was an out as so were fly balls balls hit over the parked cars on a fly were a double if the ball hit the building in was a triple or home run depending how high it hit. Yo Guys! PIMPLE BALLS ruled my neighborhood in Philly! They were the only balls you could make sail on a peg in from the outfield (the next block.) They were the best for halfies after they died and you may even go home with a star shaped welt on your butt after a heated game of “assball” If anybody knows where I can find PIMPLE BALLS please let me know we’ll choose you in if you do!!!
