PS 66 in Richmond Hill Queens had everything from punchball, stickball, slapball (“Slap”). basketball, off the wall, asses up, ringelevio, coco-monster, chinese, handball, whiffleball, errors, 5 boxes, hit the penny, strikeouts, to softball. I even remember the “non athletic” kids playing checkers, chess, or cards off in some corner. Out in the street were skelly games, I Declare War, Tops, and kids doing unbelievable things with yo-yos. Soemtimes we would use nearby Forest park fo ringelevio…and of course one of the Queens meccas, Victory Field. What memories. This experience of playing led me to my wonderful profession – a Physical Educator.

I filled many many days playing Scully in Village on the Green in Haverstraw, New York in the early 70s. We had a board painted on a basketball court in the park. It was great to have hours of uninterrupted play and you could really send the other players way out of town when you wanted to. Thanks for a great site…I needed the information to refresh my memory on the rules to teach my own kids.

Well I would be considered a baby to most of you. I’m 21. I lived at 2055 Cruger Ave, Pelham Parkway/Bronx Park East area, across from PS 105. Went to that school, until 6th grade, JHS 127 in Castle Hill, and Dodge VHS in Fordham. I lived on Cruger untill I was 20 years old and and now I live on 184th st and Park Ave. I remember playing off the stoop, skelly, asses up, brake the chain, steal the bacon, stickball, punchball, jumping rooftops, hiding in Parkchester projects, ect.. Now I travel all over the Bronx to play handball. It’s so great to hear about how the Bronx was back in the days. Please tell all the stories you can. Up until now I felt like I was the only one defending the Bronx. Although my mom and dad grew up on 149th street, I don’t get to hear the real stories about how it was back than.

I used to play Skully all the time, growing up in Corona, NY. I am trying to collect enough information about the game to now teach my kids how to play and even create a permanent Skully board in my suburban driveway. It was always a city game. I loved the game and intend to keep it alive by passing it on to the next generation.

I am from Brooklyn, NY- does anyone remember playing a game in the 50’s called skelzie? we drew a big box with little boxes in the corners, and used bottle caps filled with wax, orange peels, etc… and shot the bottle caps from box to box. If anyone remembers this game—-please let me know the rules, etc… I would like to pass this game on to my kids. thanks Sara P.

Tim, Please send us an e-mail. Your note is the first time we’ve heard that the game was played in Baltimore. We’d like to follow-up with you. You can send to me and I will forward to our skelly master Hugh McNally. I can be reached at Mick [at] streetplay [dot] com

This is truly an amazing website! I was looking at another discussion group (on another site) that was trying to recall childhood games, and first thought was of Skelly! A little internet searching and VOILA! Here’s a whole discussion devoted to it. After reading through all the messages and memories, I guess it’s time I chimed in with what I can recall from the game in Baltimore, MD circa 1970-75. The board (drawn with chalk) typically occupied most of the street (within the bounds of cars parked on both sides). Plastic and metal twist-off caps were usually used; filler material of choice: asphalt, heated by a hot summer sun. A number of years ago, while in college, I asked my friend Nate about Skelly and what he remembered. I’ll never forget, he went to the blackboard during a study break and drew a complete Skelly board. If memory serves me correctly, it’s basically what McNally has, although I’m not recalling the trapezoids around the “13” (Must be gettin’ old ;-). Skelly tournaments were big stuff; winning one and you’d be the most admired kid for blocks. I agree that today’s youth have really missed out on creative play. Playin “It” (tag), “Patty Cake” (Miss Mary Mack, etc.), “Jump Rope” (double dutch, etc.), “Marbles”, “Jacks” (those metal, 6 pointed stars used with a rubber ball) , “Hide and Seek” and others are becoming lost art forms. Not that I don’t mind some of the new games, but what happens when the power’s off? I’m going to do my best to try and save what I can for my kids to enjoy!

man i used to play skelly till my finger nail was worn down.sometimes we played kickies and throwies some tops were never seen again and when you became a killer every body would scatter youd have to chase them down to get them out some games would start on one block and end 2 or 3 blocks down.some tops where throw onto roofs or any were the was hard to get to. on rainy days we practiced our hiking and shooting skills in the project hallways for hours. im all grown up now iplayed from 1974-1978 i never forget playing skelly eating free lunch and talking about the 44. caliber killer and the blackout of 77. for apoor kid like i was, thank god i had skelly. god bless. kingsboro 7th walk
