I played what we called bottlecaps outside Philly Germantown area . We used corked bottlecaps and we had a skull and crossbones in the center referred to as the poison box. I have yet to hear anyone in the archives refer to the Handspam werein you spread your hand out as wide as possible and undercertain cicumstances you could move your bottlecap from thumb to pinky to advance towards a certain box. Any pointers on this? I plain forget.. Carol

Who remembers Washington…

Who remembers Washington Baths at Coney, and Bay 15 and 16? I had a friend whose mother nursed the mother of George Tilyou who owned Steeplechase. As a result we would get passes to the park often that entitled us to 12 rides. I was about 11 years old when my friend coaxed me onto the parachute ride one summer night. After the first couple of rides up and down, I got over my fear and rode all night until the park closed.

Here’s the version I know of the MTA song: Now let me tell you a story ’bout a man named Charlie On this tragic and fateful day He put ten cents in his pocket Kissed his wife and family Went to ride on the MTA CHORUS But did he ever return No he never returned And his fate is still unlearned (Poor old Charlie) He may ride forever ‘neath the streets of Boston He’s the man who never returned Charlie handed in his dime At the Kendal Square Station And he changed for Jamaica Plain When he got there the conducter Told him “one more nickel” Charlie couldn’t get off of that train CHORUS Now all night long Charlie rides through the tunnel Saying “What will become of me?” How can I afford To see my sister Chelsie Or my cousin in Roxbury? CHORUS Charlie’s wife goes down To the Scolley Square Station Every day at quarter past two And through the open window She hands Charlie a sandwich As the train comes rumbling through CHORUS

RE Finkelstein’s “Time”…

RE Finkelstein’s “Time” post. I also remember playing a game called Time in the early 60’s in NE Philly. Very vague on the rules though. Sorta remember it had something to do with guessing a TV show, song, or movie. Not sure what the purpose was, but I remember counting the time . . .One O’clock, Two O’clock, Three O’clock etc. Does anyone else remember more about this game?

> I “invented” the glass bottle cap I knew it would be someone from the Bronx. The game was just so much more “evolved” there. Only a Bronxite would use the term “technology” in reference to a skully cap. Your sewer cover description of cap production is how I did it too, but now that I have a Home Depot credit card, I went out and bought a glass cutter to see if it would facilitate the process. Amazingly, it kinda works! -Hugh McNally / Bronx native / Skully player

I “invented” the glass bottle cap described in earlier messages (i.e. the glass ring at the lip of a bottle which can be broken off if scraped just right over a sewer cover) Actually, it was discovered by accident, but as soon as we saw the glass ring we knew it would be perfect for Skully. This amazing discovery occurred on Walton Ave. in the Bronx circa 1965. Of course, it is possible that others developed this technology independently. Does anyone recall seeing a glass bottle cap in use pre-’65?

I meant to say: “Definately the Stairwells.” Private enough to practice you French, but uncomfortable enough to prevent taking it any further. Brooklyn Birth Control?

I played in handball tournaments there in the seventies. The last two years, I held Halloween handball parties there. Alot of people, and employees, had forgotten that the handball courts even existed. They recently renovated the first floor.
