When I was a child growing…

When I was a child growing up in Far Rockaway NY, the cold war was there , I remember the cuban missle crisis and how we knew we were going to have a war. It was the 60s and all of us guys went and played ( against our Parents Advise ) in the Old AC Field the AC stood for Army Camp. Back during WWII the Field was a small Army Camp. well we played there for hours as kids, learning all we needed to for survival ( should the russians land on the beach ) Which by the was was only 300 ft from my house. I remember the day me and 4 other kids were in the field just playing away when this Drunk ( thats why our Parents didnt want us there ) Popped up and scared the daylights out of us all.We ran as fast as our little feet would carry us back the the safe haven of home. Those long past days of childhood still bring a smile from the face of this 49 year old kid .

I lived on Stuart St. between R & Fillmore and we hung out mostly on the block until we got older and started hanging out in the park near 278 and the handball courts. Played stickball in the spring/summer, touch football in the fall/winter, handball & basketball in the park, weather permitting. Stuart Street boys, at various ages & times, were Danny & Carly Carlucci, Roddy Walsh, Ray Lyons, Chris Dengel, Gene Balise, Robert Russell, Robert “Hoya” Georgia, Jeff & Artie Pearson, John Kennedy, Paul Dutton, Dennis Westbay, Dominic Spatola, Gumpy?, Tom “The Bomb” Carnesee(sp?), Peter Crocilla(sp?), Dominic Montabano, Joey Musso, Palumbo twins, Bobby Hazel, Kevin “MAGOO” McGrath, Kevin Barton, Charly Hurda, John “Johnny Mac” McNicholas Girls: Christine Belici, Dolores Ontario, Pat McGrath, Joanny Hassler, Barbara Dunn, Beth Walker, Kathy Guerin, Georgia girls, Rosalia.

Socrates, it was called “Buck Buck”. When all the jumpers were on the stoopers backs one of the jumpers would yell “Buck Buck how many horns are up” and hold up 1, 2 or 3 fingers. One of the stoopers would have to guess the number. If the stooper was correct the teams would reverse roles. If he was wrong or the stoopres caved in under the weight of the jumpers the jumpers would get to go again. If any of the jumpers fell off the stoopers before the number was called the jumpers would lose and have to change positions as well.The guy against the wall (the pillow) would verify the number to prevent cheating. We played this in the Sunset Park area of Brooklyn during the late 50’s early 60’s.

My older brother (age 84)…

My older brother (age 84) described ringolerio to me yesterday. Each team had 5 guys. One would place himself with his back against the wall while the other four would hold on to him and each other in a squatting/stooped position. The other team would then run and jump on the backs of the squatting guys with the aim of making them fall to the ground. I vaguely remember playing this but am not sure what we called it. This was in the late 1940s in Inwood Manhattan

Grew up in Sunset Park area, 45th street between 5th & 6th avenues late 50’3 early 60’s. Went to Saint Michaels and John Jay H.S. Then a couple of years at NYCCC. Sunset Park was the best. We played softball in the pool in the Spring and Fall, then they put a softball court in the playground.

I’m with Jerry, I never heard of Pensie Pinkies. I grew up in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn during the 50’s. Spaldeen was the ball of choice. There was an alternate however, Second. We only used it if we couldn’t get a Spaldeen, it didn’t seem as live.
