I’m passing this great game onto my kids. Growing up in Brooklyn we played everyday at times, in fact the whole block played, kids of all ages. I also remember using my Easy Bake Oven to make the skully caps. It was a blast (NO COMPUTER NEEDED!!!) At one time we were playing so much we decided to paint the board onto the street so we didn’t have to draw it all the time. It’s great to play it again with my kids and bring the game to NJ. Get out there with your kids and have some fun!!!

Just had to throw my two cents in. I hung on mostly in Kelly Park and Melet Park, we called it Mellow Park (Remember how kids like to rename stuff) they were both in Brooklyn, Midwood, Sheepshead Bay and Ave U. area. Anyway, it was rubber matts under the swings, slides and monkey bars, the hardest damn rubber I have ever felt. Laid right on top of the CMent. Only thing it did was cut down on how bad your knees got skinned. Only helped a little cause you could still get bloody. We used to do the flying acts off the top arch of the swing, 20 feet high on to a fence, just like spider man, which is what we called it. Crazy Eddies were when you would pop the swing from under foot and the seat would swing over the bar holding it… Loved doing that one, less chance of being hurt like when you would do a “Spider-Man” I miss the old swings. Don’t see any steel cover swings anymore. The are all those rubber ones that pinch your ass in the seat. No wonder kids stay home and play video games. Playgrounds are lacking in Play these days. Man am I old.

Hey Alen UK, If they had done something like that, in my Native Brooklyn NY, they would have made a lot of criminals out of us kids. Street games were the only thing keeping us out of trouble. Sad the local government where you are from doesn’t see it that way. However, maybe they will make the connection with the rise in crime… One could only hope.

I know this was written a long time ago but yes, it was just like the movies… I grew up in Brooklyn NY, Sheepshead Bay area and all I could remember was wanting to go play all the time… Would run home, eat and boom out to play for as late as I could get away with… Then home for dinner and TV… Ahhh Youth.

Having read online how hard they were to find, I ordered six spaldeens on e-bay. Then I was buying some groceries at a Fred Meyer store (I’m in SW Washington state) went over to the sporting goods on the off-chance and they had boxes and boxes of spaldeens $1.99 each and boxes of some off-brand ball- not a pensie- for $1 each. So if there’s a Fred Meyer anywhere near you, check it out. Boy was I surprised!

So glad I found this site. I played Chinese handball in Manhattan in the late 70s. I remember a favorite trick among my friends was to give the ball a lot of top spin on the return hit, so that when it came off the wall, it would hit the ground and reverse direction from the receiver!

I live in Castleford, England, U.K. We live in a pleasant, peaceful cul-de-sac, where kids from ages 3 to 23 have played street Tag Rugby, Soccer, Basketball and Cricket for the last 25 years. It’s a joy to see and encourages participation and good health away from the video console! Yesterday the police visited our street after a complaint of noise from a few residents and banned ALL ball games with immediate effect. They have said that even if my 3 year olds plays with a ball in the street, they (or I) will be arrested and an ASBO (Anti Social Behaviour Order) applied for, possibly leading to a 6 month exclusion from the town!!!….. This IS NOT A JOKE and the action is apparently supported by our local Government Representative. So… whatever you play, enjoy it ….and be happy that you don’t live in the UK!!!

Hi all, I grew up in Brooklyn (Flatbush to be exact) and graduated from Erasmus in 1958. Over the years I have tried to spread the beauty and elegance of our language only to be met by indifference and even disbelief. I hope the language is still strong and I’d like to confirm this by checking out my pronunciation with Brooklyners from my age group but also with younger speakers to see if things have changed. Please let me know if you agree or disagree with the following: 1.
