A quick note about a small story related to the Semi-Finals. The field was on Vanderbilt Ave, next to Grand Central Station. THere were pedestrians strolling in and out. I saw one lady, walking with a cane and told her that we might need it for a bat. She stopped and handed it to me, saying “take it.” I was stunned but she insisted, saying it was meant to be. We received the following note about it today – Thanks “Stamstar.” I showed & told a lot of people about it. – Mick so this is the story…slipped on an acorn going down the stairs outside my house and tore a ligament which required surgery. after four wonderful weeks of peace and quite my boss said get back to work or else. my doctor said take the cane. it will give you balance. since i live in commecticut and work in new york i must be unbalanced anyway. however the cane became a pain and was really getting i n my way when i saw your game being played. It brought back a bunch of memories of my old neighborhood on Loring Place in the Bronx. It was mostly the boys that played ball. Richie Hoffman had the best stoop. Girls played potsy or jump rope. we were pretty tame back then. Anyway it seemed that there was a calling from above for me to donate my cane to your cause. I hope by now it hase been used many times and given many people pleasure. sincerely, stamstar

What neighborhood in Brooklyn were you from? We’ve been finding that Stickball in Manhattan was mainly slow pitch, in the Bronx fungo (hitting by yourself). IN Queens – fastpitch, wall ball – or what was jsut called stickball was played mainly as you describe. In fact, we’ve just talked to someone who has a L.I City Queens league based on this. Brooklyn seems to have had a combination.

I grew up in Manhattan, in what is now known as SoHo, in a loft. On the floor of our house we had a hopscotch board. We made it out of tape. My grandmother and I put it down on the floor one day so we could play the game together. Maybe she was embarassed to play this game in a playground with me. She was in her mid sixties. Now I look at my mother who is in her mid sixties and don’t think it’s too old to play at all. When my grandmother did it when I was a kid I understood why she hid it, because she seemed so incredibly old.

Our present team is made up of former kids from the Bronx… we played with our father “Bouncer” who loved stickball. When our parents moved to Florida, he formed a team (still called the Florida Kings). Soon after he and a couple of friends (Larry and Pete) began games between the Florida Kings and the Young Devils of Manhattan… traveling between the two states. As a result of that, there are now many teams participating in twice a year tournaments between the States and, as of this year, California. My Dad died on a stickball field… he was as close to heaven as he could be at the time… he loved the game… he was with his sons and good, long time friends… doing what he loved… so… he was blessed. We go on playing… we love the game as he did. We recognize the close relationships that these games have produced… the friendships that will never fade, the memories that will never fade… We remember the Bronx streets… the streets of Harlem… Mott Street… We will never forget where we came from. Our children have now become a part of it too.

Regarding “fishing ball out of sewer”: About ten years ago, corner of West Broadway and Ericsson Street downtown Manhattan. Woman emerges from coffee shop with breakfast, is putting change back into purse, driver’s license falls out, falls into sewer. Several men who harbored cherished memories of lying on their stomachs and retrieving spaldeens spring into action: “Get a coat hanger!”, “Don’t worry, Lady — I’m an old hand at this.”, “Oh my God! I haven’t even thought about this in forty years!”, etc.. A hanger is produced, the tool is properly fashioned, the license (which had lodged on a dry ledge within the sewer), was adroitly brought to the surface, and returned to its owner. Woman proceeds to work with grateful “thank you” to all. In her wake, a very unlikely group of various New Yorkers were all grins while a common memory cast its spell.

They don’t make spaldeens like they used to. Too many balls were breaking left and right.

Weather is hot today. Well over 90 degreed. A large crowd turned out to participate in the stickball contest and Five teams registered. In the first 2 games the scores were Old Timers 4 Bad Boys 3 Washington Bombers 10 Harlem Heat 1 Winners were Washington Bombers and Old Timers. The Bombers then went on to play te Clean Machine. Old Timers played the Bad Boys in a classic stickball game. Looked as though old timers had I made, leading 3-1 going into the th and last inning. But the Bad Boys weren’t about to give up. With some good hitting and an error, the Bad Boys scored 2 runs and sent the game into extra innings. Bad Boys were able to recover and take the game in the 9th. Due to the heat, and the length of th games, the final matchup between today’s winners, to determine the Manhattan championship will be played at the end of August
